LR Ram usage

Hi,

I have a MBP 2.66 i7 with 4GB of ram, recently after a few shoots with friends and some wedding, my Ram usage seems to be going through the roof. So much so it seems to cause my laptop to beach ball and be unusable for a few seconds at a time. This mainly happens when using the clone tool. Although switching between photos is becoming choppy.

My files are only 10MP, I have repaired permissions and re-installed Snow Leopard. The only thing that has changed is selecting a full 1:1 render on import which I thought would rid me of the delay when viewing photos.

Do I just need to upgrade to 8GB ram?

Thanks,

Matt

If turning on 1:1 previews made it slow, have you tried turning it off and clearing any applicable caches?

1:1 previews put a heavy load on the CPU during creation, on HDD during creation and viewing, and RAM during editing.

You can turn off their creation, and only use them if you zoom in, at which point you will have to wait.

Thanks for your replies, I had rendered on import so I thought that eliminates the problem? I decided last night to enlarge cache to 50gb as per LRqueens instructions, and rendered my entire photo library to see how that effects things.

All that will do is save the renders, history etc in more space on your hdd.
If were able to run two internal discs, and putbthe cache on a separate disc, it would speed things up.

Excluding a external storage device, correct?

Unless its thunderbolt, it will be MUCH slower if you put it on an external drive.
In fact I doubt LR will let you.

4GB of RAM is hardly "just enough" these days with many of the programs. The more the better! 4GB may of been plenty with Windows XP and such, but with Vista/W7 the ideal amount is around 6GB at least. I ran 8GB before my computer rebuild and currently now running 16GB. I allocate 80% of that space to CS5 for editing if it wants, and editing is quick and smooth.

Honestly, I would upgrade the RAM for sure. And have you thought about overclocking your processor any to help performance even more? Those i7's can do it easily on stock voltages with ease. I am running my i7 2600K from 3.4Ghz to 4.5Ghz currently... But I was able to run it up to 4Ghz with no changes to voltages.

I process 2000 photos per wedding on 4GB RAM. I did have 8GB but it wasn't working quite right so I took it out, and the speed barely changed.

Make sure you increase the size of your raw cache. This should really help. I'm not sure how big you need it to be, but I set mine to 32gb.

I have enlarged the cache, sorry I haven't replied I've been rather busy! I havent had much chance to play since I have made the changes. After a bit of googling it seems to be an issue with other people to, specifically when using brushes.

Just to update everyone, I deleted the preference file, and re loaded my catalogue, everything is perfect once again. Thanks to those that chimed in.

So does deleting the preference file put you back and default settings?

It seemed to open a new catalogue, I reloaded my old catalogue and it all seemed back to normal with all setting in place apart from one plug in.
