I was finally able to take that walk about Chicago that I have been planning for a few months! Between dodging raindrops and my degenerative disc disease flaring up, I was able to grab some shots I'm happy with. Chicago is such a beautiful city... definitely my favorite place to shoot! Hope you enjoy the photos as much as I enjoyed taking them.

As always, comments and critiques are welcomed. Just keep the critiques constructive. After all, "Photo #x is a little magenta looking" is easier to learn from than, "You suck!". Even though the last example may be the case... =]

The last threes night shoots are ok - but need to straight up the buidings rather let them felling over to the right.

As overcast day, the shoots should avoid the sky and focus on the buildings.

My 2 cents.

Thanks for sharing :)

Your two cents are well worth it! Thanks for the input. Maybe you can help me with something. The buildings appear to be not straight, because of the way the city line lays, compared to the fountain in the foreground. If the fountain is straight, the buildings appear to not be in alignment. However, if I align the buildings, the fountain is out of alignment. Any suggestions on how to reach a happy, middle ground?

Your welcome :)

Not sure what photo editing software you're using.
If you have Adobe LightRoom, you can do a vertical correction:

I use Photoshop CS5. I did use the "lens correction" tool. It's pretty handy for getting rid of chromatic aberrations, but the lens distortion correction portion is a bit touchy. A little bit of correction looks pretty good. But, if you try to push a bit too much, it looks really... well... distorted. It's like the photo is being distorted in a way that over compensates the distortion caused by the lens. Wow... I hope that made sense!

I don't know how to use CS5, sorry.

LR3 easy to straight up the building.

This shoot was taken @ 24mm, so it was 10 time worse than your shoots. But I bring the building up almost like shooting with a TS lens :)

Awesome!

After looking around, I did discover the tool you're talking about. It is also in the Lens Correction tool. I messed around with it on a shot where the lens distortion is very noticeable - the buildings on the left of the frame were leaning to the right and the buildings on the right, leaning left. Using the tool, I attempted to straighten the lines... worked like a charm! Thanks for the pointer!

Yeah...better, now that you're not leaning anymore ;)

Jim K...who also did Chicago a couple years ago, and loved shooting the architecture!

I love the Sigma 18-50 f/2.8-4.5 HSM lens, but the leaning edges is a definite negative. Thank goodness for the "lens correction" filter in Photoshop!

As for Chicago, if I could have my way about it, I would live there... right in The Loop. But, my wife (who is not a big fan of the city) says that the only way I will live there is without her and most likely, in a cardboard box! My reply... "Yes dear". =]

It is a beautiful city, for sure. A virtual playground for those of us who appreciate the architecture (and overall infrastructure) of The City of Blinding Lights!

Nice,
Now you need to marketing the shoot and sell few copy of them :)
BTW, crop out 1/3 of the sky will be nicer IMHO.

I worked on a little project idea on how to market this shot. One idea I had takes care of the sky issue. It's a 3-in-1 sort of set... likely Art Canvas on 1/8" Masonite. Something like this:
