I use the 85 1.8...but rarely at receptions...really only for speeches and first dance...otherwise I use either the 35L or the 17-40...I much prefer to go really wide for dancing shots.

Agreed. I use a mid tele for the first dance shots, speeches, etc. Otherwise, I am either using my 24L or 16-35L.

I use my 70-200L IS probably 90% of the reception, then the 50 1.2 for the cake cutting and my new :) 24L for the boquest/garter toss. I do have an 85 1.2L II for sale so anyone who'd like to see how it works for them at a reception I'll be happy to oblige. :)

This is me; I'm 16-35, typically FF. But I like the intimacy of some of the sample images they showed on the video. It's for this portion of the evening that I'm thinking about.

As I mentioned before, I use the 85 1.8 often for the first dance and other "intimate" moments...I only really use the 16-35L for general dancing shots...

I use the 85L but always have it on the 1dmk3 at a wedding, I have a 5dc but the focus in low light is crap on that. It depends on the venue, generally they are very dark and I tend to light with pocketwizards on the 5dc and then the 85L does all the candid natural light stuff. Fantastic lens and I would keep it on as much of the day as I can with a wide angle on the 5dc

For the reception? It really depends.
I mostly use my 24L and either the 50L or 85 1.8. I'll also use the 70-200 f2.8 IS MKII on occasion when I want to frame tighter, etc. I'll also sometimes use my 16-35L for UWA shots.

For receptions, I shoot 70-200mm f2.8L II for speeches, first/parent dances. 35L for general purpose dances.

I spell out which lenses I use where in my blog post (I really dont mean to keep dragging this up, but it has been quite relevant recently)

Shot receptions with the 85L, painfully slow as others mentioned and missed more shots than I cared for. Picked up the Sigma 85, don't regret my choice at all.

I always have the 85mm on one shoulder, and usually the 24-70 on the other during receptions. The 85 is great for the tighter first dance, etc. shots (When you nail it, which can be hard) and it's usually good for toasts, etc. It's a good length for doing grip-n-grins of couples when they're seated, especially from across the table. It's also one of my favorite lenses for reception details.

Canon 5D MKIII/Canon 5D MKII/ 70-200 F2.8 IS L / 24-70 F2.8L / 85 F1.2L II/ 35 f1.4L / 135 F2.0L / Canon 600 EX-RT X 2

I will use my 85 1.2 at some point during every formal dance. Like you said, I love to capture at least a few intimate close up shots of the couple.

If the wedding is in a smaller venue, I will gladly use it during the ceremony as well.

Oh and to add to my previous post I do also use the 85 1.2 during the speeches mainly on the couple. For the first dance I have a 16-35 2.8 set on a tripod which I fire remotely whilst I carry a 50 1.2 on one body and the 70-200 2.8 IS on another.

I really do vary which lenses I use depending on the venue. If the 85 1.2 is struggling to focus I just alter my style a little and go with another lens.

The remote camera often gets some nice shots.
