UGA vs Boise State C & C

Had the opportunity to shoot the Chick fil A kickoff game. I have had limited experience with football, so please, C & C away.

I'm no expert, but would like to see more of their eyes. It seems like a lot of the photos are of the players backs. You might straighten the horizon in a few of them. The exposure and colors are good

I might be a little biased on this one. But go BSU! Bummed I couldn't make this trip!

I could kinda guess you were shooting more for the Bulldogs than for Boise State. You got some great defensive player shots. And as someone else mentioned, too many backsides of plays and not enough action faces.

The good stuff includes great focus in most cases, WB is perfect and your gear performed well for you. Somehow, I'm thinking even for a D1 venue, the lighting wasn't all that great. What shutter speeds were you seeing? Some appear to have some motion blur. Among the not so good things is some of the shots with faces are seriously huge crops from long distance which really brings out the noise. Also the shutter speed at this level might be 1/800 to assure crisp stop action results. For HS, you can get away with 1/640 and 1/500 if you have to go that slow.

I'm guessing that your spot on the field was fixed and you couldn't roam the sidelines for better shooting angles? Big difference shooting HS and D1 college, for sure.

Especially liked the Boise kid going up for the ball. Great split second timing on the receiver, ball and defender getting there at the same time. Focus was nailed on both. The shots would have been front page news from the OTHER side of the field! But that's the thing about football. You can anticipate action coming toward you but a deep slant to the middle goes away from you and a deep out pattern can come right at you!

If you get more game opportunities, by all means jump on it and post more of your work. Enjoyed it.

Thanks for all of the comments, they are very helpful. This was only the fifth football game I have ever shot and the third at the college level. There was actually free reign of the field, but it was very crowded and the sidelines were mostly obstructed beyond the 15-20 yard line by the TV crews and officials. So a lot of the shooting was done from the end zones. Hence a preponderance of certain types of shots. The most frustrating part was that many who were shooting were folks with kit cameras and lenses who probably should not have been there. The lighting was tough vis a vis getting faces. If I brought the faces out more I would have blown out white uniforms. Not sure I know what the fix is for that under lights other than to use a flash which would not have been acceptable. I shot at ISO 3200, 2.8, 1/1250 on all lenses except my 200 which was shot at f 2.0. Most of my shots were with a 400 which on a Mark IV is 520 mm. Others a 70-200 and a few with a 300 and a 200.

I am no pro but I think your sig is in the way of the action in to many picctures and a lot more need to be cropped tighter

+1 for all of this...Georgia Dome should be around 1600 ISO at 800-1000ss so you should be able to produce crisp shots and control noise well assuming a) you aren't taking huge crops and b) you aren't pushing things in post.

Brian, while 1/800 2.8 1600 is nice lighting, don't fool yourself into thinking pro venues are lit as well as you think. We have some HS fields around here that are fairly close to that (not many mind you). Anyway, I've shot at a few pro venues where you'd be surprised at the lighting when not using the house strobes.

I really appreciate the comments and must say I find the play in Fball much harder to follow than any other sport I have done. Some is simply practice, but the need to track a pass and get to a receiver before the ball is a huge challenge with a 400 on a monopod. I expect to have more opportunities which I hope will go better.

Steve, no offense but what on earth are you talking about? Look at the thread you just linked...the formula that is referred to of a shutter speed at half the ISO is exactly what I just suggested. what shutter and ISO did you shoot if not somewhere around what I suggested? knowing that will end the mystery. you should consider updating the guide on SS if the old lighting settings are incorrect there now.
