Sunrise takes the edge off a bitterly-cold morning by the shores of Lake Khovsgol (Khovsgol Nuur), in Mongolia's north.

Taken with a Canon EOS 5D Mark II, Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM, Singh-Ray 4-stop hard-edged reverse graduated ND filter and Lee 2-stop hard-edged graduated ND filter.

I like the concept, but it seems waay to blown out for me, on both ends. Try reducing the contrast a bit, and maybe bring down the saturation or tone a little, it's a bit harsh. my $0.02

A digital camera and some glass...

Hmm, it's looking very good on my monitor - are you viewing it on a calibrated monitor?

BTW the 'vignetting' is not a true vignette - rather, it is an effect of shooting with such a wide lens. The shadowy areas are captured as well as the sunlit areas.

I also have a horizontal version taken at the same place - am working on that now.

I like this!!!

It's hard to have long exposures with the sun and not have the rock (in this case) be too dark and noisy... nice job!

Newbie question: "Singh-Ray 4-stop hard-edged reverse graduated ND filter" ... does that mean the center of the filter is dark and it gets progressively clear to the edge?

Thanks.

Cheers,

Andrew K

Generally you use graduated ND filters to reduce the brightness of the sky, so I would guess that he flipped it upside down and used it to make the ground darker.
