What's the better 5D2 kit?

BH
5D2 Body

  • Red Giant B&H Video Production Software Bundle ($494.95 Value)
Adorama
5D2 Body
  • Sandisk 16GB Extreme Pro CF card
  • Slinger Camera Bag
  • Additional Canon LP-E6
Both are the same price- $2499. Both are free ship.

Or should I go for just for the body alone on ebay?

PMI Digital (Authorized Canon retailer on ebay)
5D2 Body- $2247.50 (external link) - also free ship

Of course the question you'll most likely ask (as I would) is what's important to me. Well the 5D is going to be my first 'video' camera of any sort. I'm most definitely going to be dabbling with that feature, to what extent, I can't be sure.

I don't have any video software (unless iMovie counts). I haven't got a clue if the Red Giant bundle is worth a damn (it includes "Magic Bullet QuickLooks, Magic Bullet Grinder (Mac only), Magic Bullet PhotoLooks, and Knoll Light Factory for Photoshop.")

The Adorama package is attractive in the sense that I would look at adding a second battery and maybe a new CF card anyway. The bag not so much, but I'll certainly take a free one.

And the PMI is simply just the lowest price that I could personally find. Of course there are no bells and whistles attached. I would feel slightly more comfortable buying from BH or Adorama, but PMI has a solid rep. All include USA warranty.

Any thoughts welcome!

FWIW I bought my 5D2 from PMI on eBay and was very happy. Packaged extremely well. Full page receipt with shipping info, purchase date, SN# etc. Shipping was also very fast. Off the bat, the one with the extra battery might be better simply because of your intended video use. GL.

Yep I've read your post about PMI, thanks. Pricing this stuff out, it looks like the Adorama bonuses are worth roughly $200 at retail (BH prices) and that's not even including the bag.

I may rule out PMI as this evens the playing field as it were already.

I'm currently rocking some old Ultra II 2 gig cards, which may not be adequate.

So I guess I'm really liking the Adorama kit, but I'm just not sure if I'll wish I had the Red Giant software later.

Are you on a Mac or PC?

If you're on a Mac, I'd definitely forgo option #1 - as there are much better options available.

Personally, I'd go with the extra battery option no matter what.

I'm on Mac

I suppose iMovie is sufficient just to start playing around with video?

Yes, definitely sufficient and better than any options you'll find on the PC in similar price points.

I'm not a big video guy, but I am doing more and more... and I definitely enjoy working with 5D2 video on the Mac. (I'm now using FC X).

The $60 for the extra battery and the CF card, are things you'll get definite use out of. A software bundle, not so much... (unless you are already invested in learning it) ;-)a

"what's the better kit"... ehm, none? Both?

Pointless question because they have different target groups.
Kit 1 might be good if you will use it for video and haven't got any software yet - stress might.

Kit 2 will appeal more to the photographer.

Basically, think what YOU want to do and what suits YOUR needs - then work out the prices for the individual pieces and compare. Also, keep in mind that sometimes the kit might not contain the equipment you want (e.g. slower card than you want, etc.)

ON this note:
I personally would generally go to a shop, get a kit with a lens buy some more stuff and ask for/negotiate a lower price -> works at least in Germany :)

Did you even read the post? I did go into what MY needs were.

The only thing that I don't really care that much about in the Adorama kit is the bag (although it's a nice freebie still at the end of the day)

The CF is a Sandisk Extreme Pro, which I believe is their fastest card. And the battery, well it's a Canon battery, not much to say there.

Did overread the second bit - but still something you really need to decide for yourself.
-> And you need to research the "movie bundle" by yourself too.

On that note: For video you want large cards - 8GB will get you pretty much about 22 minutes (1920*1080) - if you want to risk playing with MagicLantern and use higher bitrates it will be more data in less time still.
16GB if possibly the minimum you should use for video, 32GB might be even better.
