Just wondering if the lenses for my 40D will work on an Elan 7 35mm SLR? If not, what walk-around lens do you recommend for the Elan 7?

Thank you. :D

EF lenses, yes. EF-s lenses, no.

Personally I use a 70-200 and a 17-40 on my Elan 7E.

And this.

Though any Canon 50mm is a real treat to use on a FF camera (i.e. Elan).

Ah, so my Sigma 10-20 and Canon EF 28-135 will work. Wow, that's a pleasant surprise. Thanks guys! :D

Your Sigma probably won't, as my bet is it has an APS-C image circle (even if it has an EF mount). Your 28-135 will work, though.

The Sigma 10-20 will mount, however I'm not sure if the mirror will hit the lens (I was too afraid to try), you will also get a lot of vignetting with it and a round image at wider angles. The 28-135 is not a bag choice for a walkaround lens on a 35mm body.

Yeah, thinking about it it is for the APS-C and you're right, that would vignette badly. Well, at least I know that the 28-135 will work so I'm still happy. You guys made my day. Now it's on to buy the body. Thanks. :D

I don't have SIgma 10-20, but do have another 3rd party ultrawide... Tokina 12-24. It will fit and work on full frame to about 18 or 19mm wide before it starts to vignette at all. I won't try it any wider (there's no reason to risk it, since it's vignetting anyway, and It might interfere with the mirror in my 5DII).

I also know that the Tokina 11-16mm can be used on FF at 16mm only. I haven't done so myself so can't say if there's light falloff in the corners or not.

But, you might want to give it a try with your 10-20. Just take the lens off the camera and look at the back of it, focusing and zooming from one extreme to the other. See how much the rear elements protrude, if at all. Many UWA use a "retrofocus" design, I just don't know about the 10-20 in paticular. It might give you a wide angle option, even if only at 20mm that would still be pretty cool.

Previous responses are correct, EF-S lenses won't even mount (well, they can be modified to mount, if you don't mind taking a Dremel to your lens). Your EF 28-135 will feel right at home on the Elan 7 (I've used that lens on that camera, in fact). Third party lenses all use the EF mount, so will fit. But some are "crop only" designs that are more likely to vignette strongly and some might have rear elements that protrude and would interfere with the film camera's mirror.

Ok, at 11mm the Sigma has roughly the same optic clearance with a paper straight edge across the middle of the mount as the 28-135mm at 28mm. At 10mm it touches and lifts the paper.

It "seems" that it will clear from 11-20mm. I guess the thing to do is to buy a roll a film and make the first shots at 11mm, 12mm, 13mm, etc, until I find the point that it no longer vignettes.

Thank you very much for your response Alan. :D

I'd be cautious about trying that lens if the rear element is anywhere near protruding. It's not worth the risk of mirror to element interference - that 28 will be pretty wide on 35mm (roughly an 18 on the 40D)

Good point. I had a 28mm prime years back and that was definitely wide.
