Well, it finally happened. Over the Labor day weekend doing some test shots, the mirror decided to come loose. I had called Canon back in January or so and was told to wait until it fell off. I called this morning (Tuesday) and they emailed the forms and finally got the label from UPS. It's all boxed and ready to go to UPS on Wednesday morning. Hopefully there will be no problems like I know some others have had.

Gave to UPS on 9/7 and FedEx delivered today, 9/21. I did have to laugh at the note under service details - "Your product has been examined and the mirror did not operate properly". Really?

The cleaning left a little to be desired though. A little piece of black crap either on the mirror or focusing screen that won't come off with a blower.

It happened to me on the Fourth of July. I sent it in and it took three weeks to get it back.

As with you, they said that they cleaned the sensor (which it didn't need) but what I got back was a dirty sensor:(! The main problem, though, is that the sensor has some damage from the incident. I wish they had examined it in-shop and caught that because I am procrastinating about sending it back in (at my expense)...

I had a closer look and it's definitely on the focusing screen. I've got a bad feeling that it was scratched when the mirror fell off. It's over on the edge, so it shouldn't affect anything. I could always put the original back in or just order another as it's probably cheaper unless Canon will cover it. I may call them later.

Yeah, I had just cleaned the sensor too.

Luckily it's a cheap fix. You can pick up a standard focusing screen for ~$15 on ebay.. I just replaced my scratched screen the other day.

Yeah, I've still got the original that came with the 5D. B&H has the Ee-D for $35. It just ticks me a bit, because I called about the mirror fix at the first of the year and they said I had to wait until it fell off.vmad Luckily it's at the edge, but now my eye just goes there.

When I had sent my 5D in for the mirror fix a few years back they had evidently damaged the focus screen in the process. The mirror had not fallen off when sent in. The camera came back with the old focus screen wrapped in tissue and a new one installed in the camera.
It would seem if Canon told you to wait until the mirror actually fell off and it may have damaged the screen, they should have replaced it. Hopefully a call to Canon can get you a replacement.

Megapixels and high ISO are a digital photographers heroin. Once you have a little, you just want more and more. It doesn't stop until your bank account is run dry.

That's what they call "mirrorless" ;)

I had the samething happened to me, contacted Canon service, sent back and got it fixed at no charge. Good luck to you.
