Strictly under $1,000: Sigma 30 f/1.4
Over $1000: 24L II

Best primes in each range would probably be Sigma 30mm 1.4, Canon 50mm 1.4/Sigma, Sigma 85mm 1.4, Canon 135mm F2L, Canon 200mm 2.8 (all under 1k)

Decide which range you want by using your zooms then purchase the prime in that range.

since you said APS-C. on a 1K budget, I'd buy the sigma 30 AND the 85 1.8 then put $100 back in the bank.

Probably a bunch of older MF Nikons with adapters :)

Or maybe 28mm f/1.8 + 85mm f/1.8.

Sigma 30 and 85 would be killer.

I have been looking at the sigma 30. Looks amazing. I already have the nifty fifty and that seems to take care of my portrait work (which is what I would buy the 85 for). Maybe I will just get the sigma 30. That's what I have been drawn to the most. Now I am very tempted to go with the 10-22mm though

The Sigma 10-20 is just as good as the Canon 10-22. You could get the Sigma 10-20 and Sigma 30 for less than $1,000.

Here's me with the Sigma 30mm at f/1.4

Here I am with the Sigma 10-20 at f/4.5

But I'd go with the 100L

Just add another $90 and you're sweet for this.
