This is one from my first "real" set of hummingbird shots(other than at a feeder)..from Aug. 2010. It's the best of the lot, but not the greatest angle..C&C appreciated please.

First of all, great capture. To get a great pose, with the wings at the right position is a mixture of luck and skill - so well done.
Having said that, a few suggestions
1. The flowers seem blown in parts and so draws attention away from the bird
2. Wish I saw all of the bird's eye
3. Bokeh is good, but it is noisy. Your ISO is 800, which is probably why it is noisy. Is it a crop - EXIF suggest so

cheers, Paul

Thanks pelooyen. :D

Yeah.. the flowers are blown-out big-time. I'm not great at PP yet, and just used DPP on this. I tried to bump the highlights down a bit.. but looked too flat.

I wish the whole eye was visible too.. but. I do like the wing detail, and being frozen, and there is a catch-light in her eyes.

Yeah ISO 800, and i had to reduce noise, whilst sharpening.. a fair bit. I didn't need ISO 800..it was just set already in the camera, and i had a few seconds to grab it and shoot. I started making adjustments, then she took off. lol You mean the pic as a whole is noisy, or the bokeh? It's also about a 50% crop.. i could have went less and a little less noise. I wanted a close view, but maybe i should have cropped wider.

It was also 1:00PM..and the dreaded noon hour sun above...harsh.

That was a year ago, and i've improved.. no hummers to shoot this year(for me), but i wanted some ideas on PP. thx again :)

Not bad - you nailed focus on the hummer and it looks like you stopped motion on him. The bright flower in the foreground is a bother as is the over exposure on it.

If you aren't shooting those things in AI Servo, you should be...would give you a series of images to choose from, rather than just one. You did well in keeping the bird parallel with the sensor to maintain focus.

Thanks everyone, greatly appreciated! :)

Yeah..i just quickly saw her as i walked by the Butterfly Bush.. didn't have time to set everything the way i should(didn't have it in AI Servo  ), i just jumped quickly to grab a few shots. The bush in front ruins it..although it shows her in her natural activities..and it's bothersome because it's so o/e. :(

As i said earlier, PP is not my strong point.. i have to figure out how to dial down the overexposure. Maybe some layers? Maybe a looser crop will make the overexposure less blatant..together with some layers. I need to learn how to deal with ISO noise better, too.
I think the main thing that saved the shot was the high(1/4000) ss.
