It was announced on September 1, 2009 - a couple of years ago. Any news about its replacement yet? I can't imagine what they'd replace it with, though!

I don't expect the 7D to be replaced very soon, at least not this year IMO
But my guess is that the new 7D will be a mild improvement and not a huge leap.
Most intermediate model don't come loaded with ground breaking enhancement (30D. 50D even the 5dmk2 although the sensor is great did not make many people happy when it came out)
But nobody knows. Everything is just speculation. So why bother.

As Borism said most updates to cameras don't appear that amazing when you already own the previous model. Furthermore many who've just saved up enough to afford the current will not be able to afford the new when it hits the market (because they always hit a much increased price point).

Plus Canon simply does not have info leaks - the only time the rumour sites are worth reading is about a few days before the official release statement when they might get one or two proper leaks as shops/agents/distributors etc.. get wind of info in advance. The rest of the time most of the rumours are just pipe dreams and guesswork based on past release timeframes (which are all out of sorts now as a result of the tsunami). Heck the 100-400mm L has had a MII version confirmed through reliable and 100% solid rumours for the last 9 or so years -- I mean one year they'll get it right maybe ;)

Tools of the trade: Canon 400D, Canon 7D, Canon 70-200mm f2.8 IS L M2, Sigma 120-300mm f2.8 OS, Canon MPE 65mm f2.8 macro, Sigma 150mm f2.8 macro, Tamron 24-70mm f2.4, Sigma 70mm f2.8 macro, Sigma 8-16mm f4.5-5.6, Raynox DCR 250, loads of teleconverters and a flashy thingy too

There are 2 pending announcements that would have to be made before a 7D replacement, in my opinion.

The 5D2 successor and the 1Ds4 or new multi-purpose 1DV, then the 7D will be shortly after that.

@Overread, that is not exactly true about the "much increased price point", in fact some of the newer offerings came in lower than their predecessors. It is quite possible that a 7DII could come in under the $1700/1800 initial offering price.

Teamspeed - Ah I mean increased price point from the current market point of the item they are replacing. So a currently £/$1K camera body might be replaced with a £/$1.3K body or even up to 1.5 or higher initially.

Though my view on this might be somewhat jaded by lenses as of late (Esp since I keep looking at the 300mm f2.8 IS L MII ;)).

There might be three, if they do anything with the 3D rumor.

Oh that rumor? That has been around for years (5 or so, and never seems to die)... :D

BELLS AND WHISTLES

What sells cameras these days???

1. Gazillion ISO capability
2. Bumpteen Billion pixels
3. Articulating LCD screens

The next new innovation (planned for July 2012) is a built-in espresso maker for the times when you are out shooting and need a quick pick-me-up!

Next will be touch LCD, much like what the EP3 does. You just touch the LiveView where you want the image to be focused, the camera focuses at that point and takes the shot.

Touch LCD
Built in wifi/GPS
Improved audio recording (video)

Heck I could see them putting a headphones jack and MP3 playback into them oneday!

I wonder if dynamic range will ever get the marketing behind it to be of note? Mostly the things we harp on about (ISO - MP) are what marketing departments thrust at us over and over till we forget all the other things; even seasoned amateurs can weaken under the barrage that is marketing

Don't mention that one. I was about to buy the Mk I but decided to wait a year. It's hurtful to see the price of the Mk II.

Built in wifi/GPS

Think this would make many people quite happy. Wifi for tethered studio shooting and GPS for landscapes etc. :)

Expresso would be nice, but if it doesn't have a Pez dispenser I'm not buying. Nothing beats a sugar rush....

Haven't you heard what happened in Japan earlier this year? There has been an earthquake, then a Tsunami, then they had a nuclear meltdown that they are still dealing with up to this very day in case you've forgotten. Don't you think that is likely to hit production?

That would be relevant when discussing production capacities. But not really a reason for not speculating about release dates or features for new models.
