That would be relevant when discussing production capacities. But not really a reason for not speculating about release dates or features for new models.

Release dates would all slip for the same reason that production is slowed or stopped: ie. lack of people working in their normal day to day jobs, whether in production, R&D or engineering.

Isn't release dates constantly slipping without rolling power outages? I did spend lots of time waiting for the 40D, 5Dmk2, 16-35 mk2 and 100L, despite very early queueing.

But future lines of production need production capabilities in order to be realised; and its not always a good policy to have too many product release announcements when the release date is so far off or keeps slipping (just look how many got rather disheartened by the slow release of the new super telephoto lenses; granted a smaller number numerically than DSLR upgraders, but still many were rather worried about the release after all the delays).

Tools of the trade: Canon 400D, Canon 7D, Canon 70-200mm f2.8 IS L M2, Sigma 120-300mm f2.8 OS, Canon MPE 65mm f2.8 macro, Sigma 150mm f2.8 macro, Tamron 24-70mm f2.4, Sigma 70mm f2.8 macro, Sigma 8-16mm f4.5-5.6, Raynox DCR 250, loads of teleconverters and a flashy thingy too

Sure, but having weeks of no employee activity puts a quick damper on plans. The issues still aren't resolved from what I read, there are still ongoing issues, it just doesn't interest the media anymore.

Haven't you heard what happened in Japan earlier this year? There has been an earthquake, then a Tsunami, then they had a nuclear meltdown that they are still dealing with up to this very day in case you've forgotten. Don't you think that is likely to hit production?

But Canon did have a press release way back in June that they were back to full production, with all facilities up and running.

The lack of supply has not total been down to the Tsunami, but more due to Canons heavy cut back on production pre Tsunami because of the global economic forecast.

So a very reduced production line and THEN a Tsunami only compounded a lack of units coming out of Japan
