While hiking in Montana we saw lots of wildlife and extraordinary landscapes. When we came around a bend in the trail on one particular ridge this mountain goat was there. It didn’t really seem to recognize us as a threat/didn’t really care because he moved off at a slow pace. Seeing first hand and up close the ability to scale up or down shear rock was very impressive.

How beautiful! It sure looks like a muscular animal. I guess it has to be to be able to climb like that.

That's an animal I have never seen up close. You said it didn't treat you as a threat, but I still wouldn't want one running at me. Excellent job!

Thanks everyone for looking in.
This was my first encounter up close with a mountain goat and several things immediately stood out. Their bodies look to be solid muscle with horns that are incredibly sharp and very smooth. Yes, they have the odor of the average barnyard goat. I was that close. Most areas above 7,000 feet still had plenty of snow and this was mid August, making it hard at times to keep your footing on the narrow trails.
