I am about to edit my first serious video of a testate amoeba with Premiere CS5. I just want to get the color and lighting right and cut and pasted a few sequences. I'll be happy if that comes out OK. :)

Thats a first step, and an important one IMO. Start, get better with Premiere, learn its shortcomings. And when youre comfortable with it, start learning After Effects. Thatll keep you busy a long time AND open all kinds of doors into types of video editing that will both boost your creativity and help you turn out a better product. Better products attract more attention, more viewers, more minds reached.
