I just bought a new 28-80mm and the kit hood that comes with it seems to shallow to do anything at all.
Would it hurt to buy a lens hood not made for that lens but uses the same thread/filter size?

Not really; unless you get one that's too deep, in which case you'll likely wind up with part of the lens hood in your shots at wider focal lengths

Not sure if vignetting would occur or something to that effect.

Thank you. I never thought about this..
I'm thinking about buying an off-brand hood, so if it's cheap and doesn't work it won't be too much of a loss.

Let's see if I can explain this right..
It doesn't seem to extend out far enough to block stray light and prevent lens flare-

The hood for your lens is the Ew-60c.
It is rather shallow, but if you go with anything deeper you might run into vignetting problems.

The included hood is intended for a full frame camera. Since your camera has a smaller sensor with a narrower field of view, a deeper hood would be advantageous.

The hood on the left was included with my 17-40, intended for full frame. The hood on the right, intended for the EF-S 17-55 (a crop sensor lens) works just fine with the 17-40 on my crop camera.
