Hi,
i got a 2nd hand 1ds2 but i am not able to change any personal setting. it says that it needs the EOS viewer utility to change it.

I have done a google search and a search in this forum but found nothing useful.

do you know where i can get it?

many thanks.

I don't know -- Have you installed the Canon EOS utility? That is what people use, I believe, to set user metadata in the camera

You have not only to have EOS Viewer Utility but also a Firewire (IEEE 1394) conection, AND be running a 32bit OS, to change the user settings and Pfn's.
Downloading images from the camera will work OK through the USB connection on the camera - but very slowly as it is USB 1.0.

If you don't have the Canon cd that contains the software then there are workarounds (registry entries) to install from the updates on the Canon websites. Google "Canon software install from updates" or something similar.

If you don't have a PC running 32 bit XP with a firewire connection, find a friend who does. Install the EOS Utility and connect your Camera. You will have to install the drivers for the camera also. Go to the personal settings in the utility and check on everything. Once you install this to the camera, you can make changes at the camera level.

Just a clarification:
Custom Functions are set through the camera menu,
Personal Functions have to be set through EOS Utility,
Name and 'phone number to show in the EXIF have to be set through EOS Utility.
Sometimes later version of EOS Utility will not 'talk' to the camera despite having the correct WIA Driver and Firewire drivers installed on a 32bit OS - in this case try a version of EOS Utility that is as old as the camera, or try using an older 32bit OS (like Win XP instead of Vista) - this seems to depend on the Firewire card/drivers...............

I installed some old EOS Solutions disc and downloaded/upgraded EOS Utility 2.7.2 from Canon USA.
Worked fine on Mac with Snow Leopard thru a firewire with 1ds m2.

Yes, if you've done an older installation it all can be upgraded -- otherwise you will need some kind of "evidence" of a previous installation...
