This is for my Mum, she just does email, web, and spreadsheets. She never plays games, she just wants something simple and reliable that will last a long time.

I'm deciding between the two laptops below for her, no others, so please don't suggest anything else. Both have Sandy Bridge processors, but the cheaper one has a B940 which is about 2/3 the speed of the i3. That's irrelevant for Mum, so i'm really more interested in build quality.

Here are links to the two options, the E520 (external link) and the G570 (external link).

I'd go for G570. Bought one of those from Frys here in the US for $266 recently, and added 8Gb RAM. I can now do Lightroom, e.t.c. with no noticeable lag. I also installed Windows 7 x64 Professional, and it runs pretty fast. Even to my tasting :D

Tim, the e520 is better built, and from lenovo nz, on special this week and a lot cheaper.

mine is nice and clean, easy to use with a nice track pad.
Amd lighter and more ridgid than similar spec asus or dell

Thanks guys. One vote each way... hmmm. Better built is good, it suggests it might last longer. For the sake of about $60 + GST extra I think it's worth it, but i'll see if my Mum agrees.

Thanks for the opinions :)
