They're irrelevant points for me given the comparable IPaq's are at least 40% more. We don't need those features. I can get the Dell for £189 which is about the same we'd pay for much more basic iPaq's that don't have wireless, bluetooth, 480x640 resolution and don't include a free spare battery I get with each Dell.

Ruggedized casings? You mean like my old Jornada 548 has? Back when HPaq still made quality stuff, before Carly and the marketroids came along to mess things up? I regularly upgraded my Omnibook laptops to new and improved models, until the "improved" part was the improved usage monitoring they got because of my needing to send the stuff for repair. Same with my Jornadas. The 548's still performing up to its limits. THe 568 (a replacement from extended service contract, BTW, so not the first to pack up) has essentially died. Hardly surprising. The good controllers of the 548 got replaced with cheaper ones in the 568. If Toshiba weren't pulling out of the PPC market, I'd recommend them. As it is, whenever I need a new one, it looks like Dell may get a call.

I've always had IPaq's, ever since they came out, but am ready for a change. I'm looking to get three x50v's because they are just discontinued but still top spec. The Uk price I can get them for is almost half the price of a new 4700 so seems a no brainer for same spec practically. Are there any usability issues with the Dell v's HP worth considering because I am getting them for a few member of my project team who haven't used PDA's before, tho' familiar with Wiondows obviously. Also, they seem studier built than the HP's, tho' I didn't look at this years IPaq models ... any reliability issues you've found with the Dell's?

hp still makes quality things just to let you guys know. the top spec 4700 series has a metal casing, but that doesnt make it ruggidized like the casio cassiopedia dt-5200 or any device of that industrial sort. their lower ppcs are still pretty well built. its just their features to price ratio just doesnt compare with dell's. do you really need a biometric fingerprint scanner? if i wanted your device i would just take it, hard reset it and make it mine, i dont care about your info. but thats just me, maybe theres actually somone out there that wants your info and not the device ( )

but back to condyk, what do you mean "usuability issues?" as far as the x50v is concerned, dell has manged to work out all kinks, but if we are speaking of the x51v and windows mobile 5 theres still some conflicts with bluetooth among other things that have to be worked out and im sure dell is onto those probs. a newbie will pick it up quickly with some pointers of course (like me and photography and you guys!). hp hasnt been very good about customer support, ESPICALLY support for upgrading older devices to newers OSs but dell on the other hand have been top noch in that area...even to the point of giving them away for free.

the dell is really sturdy and solid for a plastic device, better than the 3 ppcs ive owned before (casio em500, ipaq 3835 - metal, ipaq 2210 to relist them again). however dell doesnt give any software packages except for demos but for the price i dont care! the difference in screen quality is minimal, the dell screen is pretty darn amazing already so theres not really much of an argument to make there. no relibility issues at all. ive been on the forums at pocketpcthoughts.com and pocketpcpassion.com (when it was still up) for quite a long time now and havent seen anything worth noting. but thats not to say you may get lucky and get a lemon or a partial lemon.

no no, kaitanium, I was talking about the other models, not the 4700/05. I can't recall the model numbers, but they're the grayish blue ones that have the biometrics, wifi, bluetooth, VoIP, etc. all included. THEY DO have ruggedized casings. They are metal, but a good portion of the body is covered in some type of rubbery feeling stuff.

I know the x50v will run the new OS so happy to let the issues be worked out before considering an upgrade to Mobile 5. BT is not an issue for my team, just wireless. I use BT for my SatNav, but works fine with current OS on my iPaq. They also do VoIP which I might fancy for overseas callswhen out and about as we have some project people in Delhi. Seems the x50v is a good route as all aspects pretty well tried and tested and a very well reviewed series of devices.

Thanks for the help :D

nevermind i reread your comment ronald and i got it. you must be talking about the 2000s or 3000s series but when we speak of "ruggedized" in the pocket pc world we mean devices that can be dropped and dunked into water and mud and still work. sorry for the misunderstanding. but i have to say that the axim x50 does have that rubbery feel too and correct me if im wrong but the only ipaqs that are metal are the 4700s. hp has been pretty good in making plastic-metal or plastic that looks and feels as cool as metal hehehe.

and yes condyk, the x50v is tried and true. im about to get my free windows mobile 5 cd upgrade in the mail but i think im waiting to see if others will have problems before reflashing my device

just dont get a ipaq 6365, pain in the a.s, loses signal if it gets covered like if you put it in its case, crashing all the time, volume keeps turning down, no one can ever reach you because of the crappy reception it gets or rather it doesnt get. as a phone forget it but as a sat nav it works just.

Im on my third one.

yup the 6000 series phones have been reported as problematic. its the sole reason why tmobile has dropped it from their line. time to get a new device sony23? perhaps a new treo 700w at verizon? =)

I have a treo 650...it's great, but it's no pocket pc. I got the unlimited net access on mine from verizon wireless. What's new about the 670? higher res camera? wifi?
