Desmids - An Algae

These were sent to me by a fellow microscopist that lives in Tennessee. This particular sample was collected from a 15 acre pond surrounded by tall grass. He lives about 500 miles South of me and it appears that pond life is quite a bit different than I have here. these are all new to me, and I only know the name of the first one.

1. Micrasterias truncata - a Desmid. About 50µm end to end.

Thanks for looking Bas and Brian. I have been looking for a desmid for almost a year now and finally found some in a sample sent by someone else. I guess they are rare around here. :)

Number 2 possibly, #3 looked very close to me, with the elongated fingers of the green stuff drawing towards the centers. #1 I think is it's normal look. When it starts to dived, I think it makes a new copy, like a page in a book, one next to the other. Never caught them at it though. I think it takes days. :)
