Would anyone like to see a retro styled DSLR?

Well, I assumed Canon would do it closer to their usual prices. . .
I'll never be able to afford a Leica: I'm a Physics/Math major in college right now.

Studied physics much of my college life and 'never' is not an option as long as comprehensible and observable test of theories develop irrefutable conclusions strictly decisive of one side or the argument. Plus you'll crunch the numbers and make it work if you really want it to ;)

Your English isn't slipping; just your knowledge of the scientific method.

BTW, thanks for the encouragement Jericobot.

Not apples to oranges, style is a part of life. It's why toolboxes come in different finishes and styles. Technicians appreciate a good looking and functional toolbox, as much as they appreciate a well styled and functional tool. To say that something that serves a functional purpose cannot also be stylish, to say that a tool cannot also be art, is to deny what is evident in the market all around us. I highly doubt companies would spend the effort to design good looking coffee machines if no one cared what the machine looks like, so long as it made coffee. Yet when you look around, whether it be; coffee machines, toilets, guns, or toolboxes, the higher up the market you go, the more emphasis is placed on design and style.

Very well said...

And like I said in my original post. It would be pretty cool if they did a DSLR in a retro styled body with a set of Manual Focus primes.

no need to even make new lenses. if i could modify my canon F-1N to accept a digital sensor and processing chip, i'd do it in a heartbeat. my FD-mount lenses are already great.

Pretty soon the Luigi Colani-designed, T90-derived EOS cameras will seem pretty "retro styled" as people take photos with variously sized decks of playing cards.

Although I have to admit I'm a big fan of the looks of the Konishiroku II/III series cameras, and the big Pentax 67ii type as well. TLRs are pretty cool looking but also a bit (or extremely) impractical.

I imagine you don't care what your car looks like either, so long as it runs.

Honestly, what is wrong with that?

Ever heard of the Pontiac Aztec, or the Ford Edsel? Both were complete flops entirely because of their visual design. It just bears out the fact that the average consumer does indeed care (at least to some extent) what his car looks like.

Sure, but what's wrong with just considering a camera to be a tool for taking pictures and a car a tool for transportation. Most people don't care what their screwdriver looks like because it is a tool to them. Marketing folks have convinced us that looks make a difference when they don't. Just think about the fact that when you are actually using your car, you can't even really tell what it looks like.

Not saying style isn't important to me, or anyone else, but to make an insult to someone who puts style lower on the list doesn't seem right.

No, I don't care what the style is of my camera.

It's not necessarily about style. For example: Having a good focus screen and autofocus are contradicting goals. If you ditch AF, you can have a big, bright, DoF-accurate focus screen like the old days, making manual focusing more effective and enjoyable.

We're more or less talking about digital backs for manual 35mm cameras here. Many of those cameras are still fully capable, some more so than any digital counterpart when it comes to certain tasks.

A FF digital back that could be adapted to lots of classic cameras (it's been tried before, long ago), particularly rangefinders, would be just about the greatest thing ever and be constantly sold out for months and months.
