i just ordered one for my t3i, other than the extra juice.... the answer is...

SIZE, BULK, GRIP...... more material to grasp... simple enough! our cameras are actually tiny compared to the higher up bothers and sisters!

I love it for the XXXD series. The camera's are generally very small in the hand, gives it a bit more presence in the hand. I also LOVE the vertical shutter release. The extra juice is handy too.

I was against grips until I tried one on my T2i, now it's on most of the time as I like the feel and added balance. Now I only remove it if I'm going real light.

Easier to handle.
More battery life.
Can use AA batteries in a pinch.
Vertical controls - release the shutter, lock exposure, select focus, exposure compensation, and control the main dial without twisting your arm around.

Highly recommended.

I use the Meike brand grip for my T3i. Some people have no issues with their knock off grips while others do. Haven't have a single issue with mine and I only paid ~$40 for mine.

I got a Meike and 2 batteries off Ebay for $40, all working perfectly and the batteries last longer than the OEM Canon. Since I've only had them for a few months can't attest to longevity yet.

I got the Canon grip for my T2i and I love it because it adds some "bulk" to the camera, which I find useful. But this is just my personal opinion... The grip holds two "brick" batteries for extra power and the Canon grip comes with a separate clip which holds 6 AA batteries, just in case...

For me, it makes the camera easier to hold.

I got a Meike one from Hong Kong, I held it up against the original canon one and couldn't see or feel any difference in quality and button feel. Cost me £35 and I bought two aftermaket batteries to go with it.
I did a full two day shoot the other day and didn't have to change batteries!
It stays on all the time and love the bulk feel it gives and the side grip is great.
I used my brothers 24-70L and 530EXII with it and it felt nice and balanced.
It's a + all round for me so worth having.

I'm not too certain on that, I compared my Meike to a OEM Canon and the only difference I saw was the texture of the rubberized material. It's possible the Canon uses a superior plastic but can't tell from looking at them. Someone posted a comparison which I can't seem to locate ofthe OEM and aftermarket BG's disassembled, even down to the wires and printed circuit board they looked identical. It is highly possible one factory in China makes them all.
