Hello everyone, i have recently purchased a canon eos 20d, originally went for the 350d or rebel xt depending on which side of the pond you are, and i walked out with the 20 which was on offer and had cashback, a stretch but worth it i think, have read the site for 2 days and 2 long nights and i feel at last confident to make my first post.

So far i have noticed 2 things wrong with my camera, it appears a piece of plastic has fallen onto the view finder inside the camera, the mark does not appear on any photos taken. This is just 2 days after purchase, so i am taking it back for an exchange, but secondly the viewfinder appears to have light fogging, lots of little circles that follow you as you pan- This is the best way i can describe this. I wouldnt mind this on a cheap camera but this is a 1000 pound camera. Is it because it has the 18-55mm kit lens? Would this not feature on the 50mm 1.4 which i am thinking of purchasing next week as it appears to be a favourite with everyone on here.

Any advice is welcome, i am a complete novice, and just hope someone can answer my concerns.

Thanks again,
Regards Andrew.

Take it back right away, have it exchanged. Welcome to the forums by the way.

OK went back to the store today and have ordered one for a straight exchange, staff were very helpful. The display one had the same problem with fallen parts on its view finder, is this common anyone else have this happen to them after the camea has been well used.

Also while i was waiting i happened to look at a few lenses for my next purchase, i know everyone here loves the 50mm 1.4, is this a sensible option to go for, if winter ever arrives here in the uk i will be confined to in door experimentation.

Also

the 18-75 lens £500 is this any good, i know people have their favourite lenses, but if anyone could point out any flaws that would be a great help, or any pros for spending this much.

Thanks again everyone
Regards Andrew.

no wait its 17-85mm f4-5.6 is USM-
Is this lens any good??? what are peoples thoughts?
App i have been told this was designed for the EOS 20.
So is this a lens that will not work on future canon cameras, or the EOS 5d
Thanks again
Regards Andrew.

Check out www.fredmiranda.com (external link) ... the 17-85mm f4-5.6 is decent enough but I would only use it for travelling myself because it combines wide and standard zoom ranges in a single package. It feels rather overpriced for the quality if you're looking for a day to day lens. The 50mm 1.4 is a lovely lens but it's arguable the 1.8 version will do 90% of what the 1.4 does at 1/4 of the price. The Sigma 24-70 2.8 DG EX Macro and Tamron 28-75 2.8 will give you better image quality that the 17-85 IS too, most of the time, and both are significantly cheaper.

Thanks for that, have had a quick look at the tamron and sigma but its all a bit dutch without someone to point you in the right direction so thanks.

I think your right on the 17-85 have read more posts about lenses and i think i would prefer to go for the EF 70-200mm f/4.0 L USM LENS, this appears to be popular.

Yes the 50mm is a defo as soon as i get my new 20d replacement i will order one, and then sign up for some classes.

Then after a couple of months the L lens or maybe for a Christmas present.

Is £280 expensive for the F1.4 50mm.

Thanks again everyone.
Regards Andrew.

Reliable supplier with fully inclusive pricing. You could also try Kerso who is a member here. Do a search under his name.

thanks for the link, seems quite cheap for a few things.
So what do people think of the Canon EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM Lens???
good or not so good?its currently at £146.99.
i am after a reasonably good lens for a first purchase price, so south of£300, am also looking at the 50mm F1.4 i know the F1.8 is alot cheaper but i cant see the point of having to replace something in the future, so what the heck go for the f1.4 right?

i picked up my replacement e20d today and its all tickety boo!!! so am a happy camper once more.
