Hey guys,

I bought a 5D Mark II battery grip by some off-brand name and obviously it's a third party accessory. Got it at dealer's price because I was an affiliate to the seller.

I thought that I would only use it for shooting stuff like portraits and events, which to me wouldn't happen very often. But I bought more strobist stuff and have lots of portrait photoshoots coming in December to improve my portfolio.

I just want to know a few things about the genuine grip, and those who have tried both should chime in!

- Does the genuine battery grip flex w.r.t. the 5D body?

- Does the genuine battery grip kinda flex a little when you squeeze it or something? Mine does and gives off that plastic creaking sound.

- Does the genuine battery grip's thumbscrew jiggle? I tend to notice small things like these when shooting handheld video, and mine does have a bit of sound that can be picked up on a microphone in an echo-y room.

- Are the buttons on the 5D2 soft-press, or "audible click" like on my 3rd party?

Thanks!!

No, I do not find any flex in the grip to the body.

No, the grip does not flex when you sqeeze it, unless of course you have a gorilla grip and apply extreme amounts of pressure. I find its build similiar to that of the 5D body.

The thumbscrew does not jiggle enough on its own to be noticeable. You can physically jiggle it though with your finger, but there is not a huge amount of play.

There is no audible click on the genuine grip, it is the identicle soft-press button as on the 5D.

Thanks!!

^^I hope this helps. I do not have any experience with any third party grips though

There is a very slight flex between grip and body. Well, there was with the grip I owned.

There is a tiny bit of play in the screw wheel.

The grip feels as solid as the camera.

The buttons are pretty much the same as those on the camera.

None of those things mentioned have appeared on my grip. One thing to mention the genuine grip is mag alloy like the camera, so there is defiantly no flex. Mine hasn't come off since I put it on nearly a year go.

One negative could be the weight of the OEM grip. When combined with the 5Dii the thing is a monster. It's like walking around holding a bowling ball, man. Not cool at all.

None of those issues appear with my Canon grip. In fact all of those and more are reasons I always stayed away from non-Canon accessories. Sell it, and get the Canon.
