I'm not 100% positive, but I think this is a Great Blue Heron (maybe a juvie?) that we saw shortly after we arrived at Plum Island yesterday morning. We'd gone to Plum Island many times in the past, but yesterday's trip was amazing compared to the rest. We had very close encounters with this Heron, but even closer encounters with Great and Snowy Egrets (I'll be posting these pics soon).

Anyway, this Heron was wading through the marshes about 50' from the road when we got there. Finally something caught it's eye and it attacked. I think it's some kind of an eel, but don't know what kind. This was my best and closest look at this bird. It was amazing!!

Excellent shots! Sure looks like a GBH with an eel.
Last flight shot with the eel in it's beak is terrific!

Excellent series and fabulous timing. I love the flight shot with the reflection but all the photos are great!

Gator Stealth, thank you! I love that flight shot too. I'm glad that one came out as well as it did because the next few shots after that one had some blurriness to them. I never knew that these Herons will hunt in marshes. I always assumed they were more of a fresh water hunter.

dgraham329, thank you! :)

BGgraphy, considering that I don't get to see these birds very often let alone this close, yes this was a BIG thrill. I wanted to go home to see my shots right away, but I had just gotten there when this happened.

butterfly2937, thank you! That's one of my favorites from the day too. :)

kmunroe, thank you again! :)
