I'm pretty sure the answer to this is "you can't" but just in case I'm wrong can anyone tell me if its possible to remove the head on a tripod where it was purchased as one set.

The tripod I have is the Manfrotto 7302YB and it came with a nice ball head on it. Generally speakng it serves all my needs (especially since I discovered I can reverse the center column) but I wouldn't mind changing the head to a geared head without having to buy another tripod.

Most tripods come without heads so my gut is yes, you can change the head. It should just unscrew. Try it but if you does not come off with moderate torque, it may not come off. I can't imagine that being the case but you never know.

Not that particular tripod - the head's part of the center column, not removable.

According to Amazon, the Manfrotto 7302YB Tripod replaced the Manfrotto 725B.

I have the 725B and while it's a nice/small/light Tripod for Traveling the Head does NOT come off, which is the reason I just replaced it with a Benro C2682TB1.

The ball head is good for general use, but with my heavier lenses it started to creep down and was not great when turned at 90 degrees.

Well that answers that. The good in this is that I just discovered I can replace the center column with one that allows me to pick my own head.

I'm finding the same thing in that the ball head on it tends to creep and is difficult to lock in place exactly where I want. It always sags just a little bit so I end up compensating. As always this forum is a wealth of info.
