As above, what's the best monopod head I can get that will support my Canon 600mm f/4? Budget isn't an issue.

Thanks in advance for your recommendations

There is only one that should be considered IMO...

Really Right Stuff MH-01
With Clamp: LINK (external link)

I owned it with a Gtizo Monopod (also highly recommended) back when I thought I was going to be using a monopod and did a review on it here: LINK

Its the best and most stable monopod solution on the market as far as i know.

I agree, recently upgraded to a Gitzo Monopod with the RRS MH-01.
Should have done it years ago......

Agreed... Take a look at the new one with the indexing clamp. I'm just waiting for the quick release version to start shipping.
I'm not sure if I will need to replace the whole unit or just the clamp as of yet... Maybe if I remember I will call them tomorrow.

That's it. RRS, there is nothing better.

In fact, nothing else even comes close.

Why do you need a head for your monopod? What are you shooting?

Why does that require you to be able to tilt as much as a head would allow? Especially so with a long lens like a 600mm. Usually, you can just mount the clamp directly to the monopod and make it work very well that way - without having to add something in the middle that can potentially be a problem vis a vis vibration damping.

I'm primarily a sports shooter (field sports and alpine ski racing). The only time I need a head is when shooting up hill on a steep headwall to catch a skier just as they crest the headwall from down low. Generally, one can achieve the angle just by positioning the monopod (which is also generally better).

No - I'm mostly curious. I've toyed with getting one of these (having borrowed one) but I always find that I don't need it as much as I thought I might. So, maybe your application will help me rationalize this to my wife. ;)

ha Id rationalize it like this: when you already have an $10000 lens, whats a $200 accessory for it?! EVEN if you never use it! lol

When I ordered my RRS monopod head they recommended using the head without the quick release

I know they say that the screw type clamps tighter, maybe that's why...
Also the lever style doesn't work with some brands of plates. If you told them what you have as far as plates go and they aren't compatible that could be another reason...

As others have said, look at RRS. I'm very happy with their products.

What?! You mean screw the lens onto a threaded stud?

Actually, now that you put it that way, if I could rationalize a $10,000 lens past her then a $300 head would be no big deal - I'd be the Jedi master of rationalization. ;)
