I am thinking of trying some manual focus lens (OMG!!! I am thinking of ZEISS) and quite having doubt on the standard ee-A screen. Wanted to try the ee-S screen, but AFAIK, it focuses only the center point. Since I am composing portrait with outer AF point most of the time, is ee-S screen a worth try?

Focus and recompose might not be possible, the DOF for my 50L is way too thin.....

The Ee-S screen has a higher focusing parabola, meaning that across the entire screen everything will snap out/in focus more readily. Its a matte screen, there are no focusing points, which are a function of the camera body, not the screen. The screen has the disadvantage that with slower lenses (F4, f5,6 etc) the screen will be noticeably darker.

"Ee-S (5D) / Eg-S (5D Mark II): Super-Precision Matte
An all-matte focus screen for the EOS 5D with finer microlens structure than the standard screens. Out-of-focus areas show more vividly than with Ee-A and Ee-D screens. It’s ideally suited for use with f/2.8 and faster lenses, especially for manual focusing. EOS 5D must be set to Custom Function 00-2 for accurate exposure metering."

:Wanted to try the ee-S screen, but AFAIK, it focuses only the center point."
This statement is incorrect, there is no change, and focusing points are not an issue with focusing screens. If you are talking about focus confirm positions, its identical to the stock focusing screen on the 5D. Are you referring to a split prism screen, which is only positioned in the center?

Mike, sorry.... Think I am totally confused on how Ee-s screen works! It tells that the Es-S works exactly the same as the stock screen....

So, it is much accurate when we using manual focusing screen right?

Sorry for the kinda dumb question....

The Ex-S screens (different x's for different Canon bodies) are matte screens, meaning at first glance they look like normal plain screens. However they have the behavior of the entire image of quickly changing in/out of focus when turning the focus ring. Thus they are easier to adjust for manual focus. This change is seen across the entire image, and is not limited to one of the focus points. However the drawback is that with slower lenses (f4 or slower) they are dimmer, a stop or more. With a f5.6 lens and 1.4X TC (f8 combination), the viewfinder is really quite dark and very difficult to use for composition let alone MF. Another thing to note is that with the Ex-S style screens the exposure changes. Cameras made to use Canon Ex-S screens (5D and later) have one of the Custom Function choices to account for the different, non linear change in exposure. For f2.8 or faster lenses the exposure change is modest to negligible.

I have an Eg-S screen on a 5D II, and only find it at best, a modest help in MF accuracy. However I use Live View 5-10X and find it a HUGE assist in MF accuracy. Unfortunately the 5D does not have LV, but all Canon dSLRs after the 5D or Rebel 400D have LV.
