Today, in the midst of all the 9/11 coverage and a visit by my son and daughter, I happened to notice a spider squeezed into a bit of a corner just off my deck.

I had to wrangle my 30D with the 100mm Macro lens on my tripod just to get an angle to see then thing at all, and it never changed poses for me and there just wasn't room to even get a flash cable on unless I did something really strange, so most of the shots got tossed to to a slow shutter speed, but some came out OK. And, I was able to get close enough to get the shots fully framed!

Here's one that I don't feel bad about -- it just looks a bit blurry enlarged:

This next one actually came out reasonably sharp:

I cropped that one in to show some body detail:

This shows how I had to wrangle my gear just to get a few shots:

And you can see how the spider was perched up close to a wall, limiting my options:

Update:

As one last step, I decided to go over the last sharper one with the Lightroom local adjustment brush set to 100% sharpening and went over the detailed areas. Not so impressive at the full frame level, but the close crop comes out pretty crisp:

Nice shots, from my perspective.

It is good do see the background to how a shot was taken, and hence the difficulties.

Well, thanks, I probably need to go through a whole bunch of photos and get caught up with sharpening!

Really nice set Tony. Amazingly sharp and detailed, and the light is perfect.

Hey thanks all! It was an interesting little project, and, with a bit of a breeze and the lousy angle, I'm glad I got at least a couple shots where that detail could stand up to "close scrutiny"!

And fortunately the light was, in fact, pretty decent -- 1/6 sec, f/16, ISO 200, slow on the shutter speed, but I managed, and ISO 200 is pretty clean with the trusty ol' 30D!
