To be honest Nick i cant really recommend the 500 too much. You can get the 705 refurb bundle at 299.99. That is the best deal on the block in my opinion.

It's the exact same thing as the 800 minus turn by turn. How can you not recommend that?

I like the 500 because it's way smaller and quite frankly I don't think I would use the turn by turn very much.

I'll be getting the sigma 50mm and a metz 44 from my parents today...

Because the edge 500 bundle new is 349.99 vs a refurb 705 bundle is 299.99. You get more on the 705 pick up for less.

You linked me to the page to buy a new 500.

My biggest problem is the 705 is twice the size and twice the weight.

I've read some stuff on people having trouble with the 705's mount, and even a couple of people who have lost theirs as a result. Basically all I really want is the functionality of my cateye, plus heart rate. Being able to accurately track my route afterwards is a plus.

Your kidding right? On size and weight? Are you a cat 5 racer? And the slide mount if it was truly such an issue a fix would have happened. Like on these forums those who are unhappy will scream the loudest while millions are happy without issue.

The price difference in my opinion is zero. 705 is easily the purchase at 20 bucks variance on the refurb side.
