No I'm not kidding on size and weight.. The weight isn't the biggest deal, but the 705 is substantially larger, and when it's on your handlebars that can be a pain to deal with, especially since I have a light I run as well. There's only so much real estate.

I don't need or want the features the 705 adds over the 500, so there's no need to bother with them IMO.

If I wanted the turn by turn I'd suck it up and go buy a 800, but really I just don't care enough about it. So I can get what is essentially 800 minus that feature and save myself $300.

But im not talking about the 800. Im talking about refurb 705 and and refurb 500

Refurb 705 bundle: 299 (external link)
Refurb 500 bundle: 279 (external link)

Size comparisons:

-Size: 500 (1.9" x 2.7" x 0.85"); 705 (2" x 4.3" x 1")
-Display Size: 500 (1.17" x 1.44"); 705 (1.37" x 1.71")
-Weight: 500 (2 oz (56.7 g)); 705 (3.7 oz (104.9 g))

20 dollar difference for turn by turn and throw in a color screen which is larger as well.

Why would you place the garmin on your handlebar to begin with? Place it on the stem and you dont worry about real estate on the handlebar themselves. The extra 1.6 vertical length wont even be noticed on the stem.Run your light on the handlebar and no issue or if you have your light on the stem run the garmin on the handlebar. Non issue.

20 bucks well spent unless you need to buy two replacement tubes or more chamois cream

A larger screen is not a Pro for me...

Stem, that's what I mean.. it still will get in the way. That and quite frankly I'm actually really considering starting to train for a tri, and so that would probably make my next bike a tri bike, and with aero bars you really have almost no room, it's a tight enough fit with a 500 and aero bars.

Also, you really can't say that it being longer won't be an issue, not all stems are the same length, and quite frankly I think mine may be a bit too long right now, so I may very well be losing some of that real estate.

More features isn't always a plus, sometimes it's worth paying a little more for less.

perhaps you should start doing some triathlons before investing in a tri bike. See if you can handle it first.

Well obviously... I never said I was going to.

I'm not planning on buying a new bike in the next few months... But it doesn't hurt to take that into consideration.

Just get another cateye  Its nice and small. Like they say buy for now not for later. You can always sell off a refurb of any product for little loss. Like your cali trip its not guaranteed your going tri but what is guaranteed is your gt bike sitting in your home right now.
