nicksan, by OCF, do you mean stands and umbrellas? ...or like a flash bracket raised above the camera?

Bryan, The wall is white-ish...

On light stands.

Honestly, they don't look all that bad IMHO. OCF is ideal, but I don't see a problem using speedlight mounted on hot shoe in a pinch. I've done that before where we were pressed for time and luckily had plenty of surfaces to bound the flash on.

I would not have used the Tupperware diffuser though...Looks like you had white or off white ceilings. I would have just bounced.

I would add to square the ceiling and lights, not the crooked stage. I think the stage being unlevel will be less distracting than the peaked ceiling with lights hanging on an angle, even if it is closer to the edge of the frame. A) the stairs are dark, monochromatic, and you could even blur them out a bit or crop as much as possible. B) they are unimportant to the rest of the shot and I doubt anyone would notice it as much as the ceiling where it's BAM! Unlevel peak, BAM! Unlevel lights, BAM! Look at the angles and the brass fixtures and it's closer to the subject's faces... Yeah given the choice between ceiling and stairs, I pick ceiling.

Okay... If I were to do the group shots over w/OCF, would this be an reasonable setup? (Given two speedlights/stands/43" umbrellas)

I will be firing two YN560's through 43" shoot-through umbrellas, each at a 45* angle to the subjects... or would you suggest a better placement for the lights?

(Sorry in advance for this horribly crude drawing,)

I usually use this type of setup (with fill on a flash bracket)

IMAGE: http://www.warehousephoto.com/images/TreeLightSetUp.gif

This if I only have two flashes with me (or sometimes I still use above setup but use on camera flash for fill)

OMG !!!! I would never have time to set this up for wedding formals... UNLESS I have a few assistants. PLUS I think it is a bit complicated for formals. I keep it to one OCF with a shoot thru umbrella.

Where do you place the OCF?

I keep it simple. camera right about three feet. Too far right and you will get shadows because you are not using fill.

Here is one with that set up:

"content protected by owner"

3 feet high or 3 feet above camera? 3 ferry high seems quite low

Takes me about 3 minutes to set up. I use 580exs on stands with shoot thru umbrellas. I spend about about 90 secs opening up each umbrella and attaching 580. Set it to slave and go. Fill light comes from built in or on bracket.

I dont understand what you would think is so hard about it?

Obviously you are a lot quicker than me :)

3 light stands- three umbrella's- remote triggers and then establishing the ratios. Then you have the breakdown. This would take me a while.

Aren't the 580 slaves a bit unreliable?
