its always nice to have that secondary piece of glass for really wide shots to set the scene as well as seriously exagerating perspective in shots like maybe a super wide from next to a soccer goal during a shot taken at it. or a super wide while a player dunks in basketball.

what do yall use as your wide angle or UWA?

i cant afford a 16-35L and it wouldnt be very wide on my 7D anyway

im currently looking at:

canon 10-22 (used)
sigma 10-20 f4-5.6
samyang 14mm f2.8
samyang 8mm f3.5 fish-eye

---

sorry meant to post this in the discussion section but messed up

I don't typically shoot wide with sports but have done some pro soccer with a Sigma 15mm f2.8 fisheye. Optically, it produced some of the nicest IQ of any glass I have owned including a Canon 300 f2.8 so that's saying something.

not a great shot during warmups but gives you a sense for the FOV.

I have a Tokina 11-16mm F2.8 that I use with my Canon 7D. Like you said, it's typically used to capture the enormity or context of the setting rather to capture actual action/motion. The glass is probably fast enough that I could but I just haven't ever had the opportunity to do so.

It's a well built lens and has performed well on both of the bodies that I have used it with (XS and 7D). I'm very happy with it.

yea it wont be used very often which is why i want to keep the price down but i would like to on occasion quickly swap lenses to take some story telling shots maybe something artsy although its hard in sports since most everything has been done im sure. but i can get some interesting huddle shots, corner kick shots and goalie save shots, and cool super wide distorted perspective basketball dunks :p

but yea i do notice that its not very common to shoot wide shots in sports when the focus is to get as close to the action as possible majority of the time and keep the shot as tight as possible.

Last year I alternated between a 8mm sigma, a 17tse, or a 21mm ZE...but the 8-15mm is proving to be extremely vesatile and convenient, and is likely what I'll stick with most this year.

yea the 8mm focal length is very appealing but im not sure how i feel about fisheye since i would be getting the samyang. i have never used a fisheye before. so its a gamble as far as sports goes. but i bet it would be fun to shoot with walking around.

this is pretty close to what i want to do with my wide as far as soccer is concerned except take it during a goal kick where everyone is crowed right in front of the goal jumping for the ball. the only other sport i can use the wide for is basketball. we dont have many sports at my school. soccer, track/crosscountry, tennis, golf, and basketball

Add my vote for the Sigma 15mm 2.8 fisheye.. I don't use it often, but when I do it is a great piece of glass. Check KEH (www.keh.com (external link)) for what they have in their used stock. I have bought 5 lenses from them and all have been awesome.

Equipment list: Canon 1Dx, Canon 1D mk III, 50D, 400mm 2.8L, 70-200mm 2.8L, 17-40 4.0L, 24-105 4.0L IS, Sigma 15mm 2.8 FE, (2) 580EX II

I have a Canon 24-70 L series which isn't very wide angled but does shoot good action shots but I do have a Canon 8-15mm Fisheye which is what I use for my wide angled shots. I havent had a chance to shoot any sport photos with the fish eye but I hope to soon before winter rolls around.

I use a canon 10-22. Don't have an examples of sports with it atm but will be attaching it to a rugby goal post for an interesting perspective this weekend. Will be doing the same with soccer from the goal corner like posted above

I have the Canon 10-22 as well as the Rokinon 8mm fish-eye. I use the fish-eye a lot more in sports situations.

thanks im torn between those 2 and if i go canon used im worried how much im investing in glass that wont get used on a regular basis. i am still leaning strong towards the 8mm FE now just based on price alone since its will do its job great and i wont have that empty pocket feeling
