Thanks for the support everyone!

Fortunately I have a friend with a yak arsenal who is going to let me try a few boats this Friday. I'm heavily leaning toward the Wilderness Systems Pungo 120 and may add a Hobie Mirage Drive-equipped yak in the future. Aside from the stability and tracking the Pungo 120 is known for, it looks like the console can easily be modded with some careful cutting to provide a decent spot for a monopod or tripod leg.

Just need some paddle practice as I've never had the need to stay dry in one before!

Is anyone here using a pedal drive system?

I have two of the Hobie Revolutions with the Mirage drive which I bought about 8 years ago when the cost was under $1800. I used mine for fishing (hands free, like photography), and they are great for that. Just a nudge on the rudder control every couple of minutes. I would not want to go back to totally paddle-powered for photography or fishing. Unfortunately, I have not been out in 5 years and one of the yaks has never been in the water.

RE: Hobie Mirage Drive kayaks

After trying the Wilderness Systems Pungo 14 I decided the foot-pedaled boat made more sense for photography purposes. And between the dealer and my fiancé I now have a 2015 Hobie Outback along with a leftover 2014 Hobie Pro Angler 12. The woman wanted one too and the dealer took full advantage of the moment

With that said, I'm really excited to have both yaks to choose from. Both were on my short list and the fiancé is happy too. We've had them out twice this past weekend. Once on a choppy/windy day with the kid and dog - that was definitely not a good day to bring the camera. And yesterday we did four hours up/down a river without the kid and dog, but with the camera. The Pro Angler is so stable and dry I can honestly say the biggest risk to my camera was spilling a beer on it.

I haven't processed any of the images yet, but I'm totally sold on wildlife photography from the yak. We saw 3 Osprey, 1 red-tailed hawk, tons of small birds, egrets, herons, and cormorants while enjoying cruising up and down the Winooski river near Lake Champlain around lunch time. From land, in order to find that kind of diversity, you need to plan a trek into the marshlands and have a lot of luck on your side around sunrise. We weren't even trying, and were totally on our own schedule, and the wildlife just showed up. Guess everything needs water at some point.

As I get some good shots I'll post them up here. I'm also working to figure out a good stability system to get the Canon 600mm on the water. My tripod legs don't play nice with the Hobie chairs.

Congratulations! Sounds like the Hobie and fiance are keepers!

Looking forward to seeing the images.

Heya,

I kind of went for a different, more simple, setup this time.

Totally casual with it.

Last time I went out, I took my 600mm. It worked. But I was tired. I hated how slow it was for what I was doing. It was a bear to take in and out of the dry bag. It survived. But I didn't take it out again. I went back to my super small 200F2.8+2.0xTC setup. It's a black, smaller, 400mm F5.6 basically. It's overall shorter (including lens hoods on this one) than the 400 F5.6L prime with hood. Still focuses really fast and as you saw above, is sharp enough wide open even with a TC like that. But even more importantly, on a kayak, it's easy to stow.

So I didn't take a dry bag this time. I just used a dang lunch box! It made getting it in/out SOOOO much faster. I didn't even feel like I was losing image chances because it was so easy to put it down in the box, or pick it back up. There was plenty of times I put down my fishing rod and grabbed the camera.

Kind of dumb-simple, and super silly looking. But it frigg'n worked.

Still, on APS-H and 400mm, the reach is very, very limited. I have to cruise very close in the kayak to get these small birds shown above. I really can't get to the big osprey. I can get to Egrets and the like, Herons, etc, they're huge. But they're not as interesting as an Osprey diving on some mullet in the Gulf. Pelicans are awesome to see dive into schools, but they too are huge and less spooked by people. The Osprey are super spooky though, ultra-spooks, trout-level spooky.

Ideally I want longer reach, but it's just not going to happen. A faster 400mm would be nice, but it will become ungodly expensive and too heavy for this kind of thing. My ideal lens right now is actually a 400 F4 DO and a 1.4x TC, giving the most reach and aperture for weight and size. But at $2k, that's not happening at all.

So, realistically, the only way for me to get more data on a subject is going to be with the resolution side of things. I'm currently feeling the limits of 8MP on my 1D2. Love the camera. But the resolution has less data on a subject that is already that far away. So my next move is likely to move to an 18MP camera, like an old 7D since they're so cheap these days and still has good FPS and aggressive AF. I'll get more pixels on target with it which is ultimately what I need since I can't get much longer reach without serious money dumping.

So soon to be: 7D + 200F2.8+2.0xTC in a lunch box! Hah.

I haven't spent too much time in that area. Looks like there are some good shooting opportunities.

I just bought an Old Town Predator MX for fishing and photography. I'll let you know how it goes when I get it on the water!
