I just bought an Old Town Predator MX for fishing and photography. I'll let you know how it goes when I get it on the water!

Have you been out photographing in it yet? Curious how you like it.

Have you picked up the 7D yet? If so, how's it on the water?

Heya,

I have the 7D now. Going to run with no grip to keep it smaller. I haven't taken it on the water yet, weather hasn't cooperated relative to my work schedule. I will however probably get out a day or two on the water with it coming up next week over the holidays as I have a week off of work.

I recently moved to a Kenko 1.4x Pro 300 DGX TC with the 200 F2.8L. As much as I like the 400mm reach when using my 2.0x TC, I think I like the speed of the 280mm F4 instead. On an APS-C sensor, with higher resolution, I will get more detail, and better pixel density than my 1D MK II with the 200mm F2.8L + 1.4x TC (280mm F4). I'm pushing it a little shorter to get to F4 instead of staying at F5.6 all the time. Not that I need the light, I have plenty of that on the water, but more for when I'm pushing in real close, I'd like that F4 for more isolation. Also, I can afford the shorter lens which will make my BIF tracking a lot easier from a moving kayak free handing the camera with the shorter focal length, and with 18MP I can crop significantly more than my 1D MKII's 8MP which I already crop from, so I'm gaining 10MP worth of density to work with.

So I'll be rolling 7D + 200 F2.8L + 1.4x TC (280mm F4). Fast 8FPS, 18MP, and essentially as good AF tracking as my 1D2. Smaller overall setup. A full frame equivalent would be a 400mm F4 (the DO lens). So this setup will weigh a bit less and cost a heck of a lot less.

In the mean time, here's some examples from today (not in a kayak, instead, I was hiking in the swamp) that show how 280mm F4 looks on a 1.3x crop, getting really close with my 1D2. When I get to use my 7D, it will have both higher pixel density (reach) and higher resolution (way more, more than double), so I will get even more detail at the same range, or allow myself a little more room.

Examples with the 200F2.8L + 1.4x TC on a crop: https://photography-on-the.net …showthread.php?p=17821307

Expect some images next week some time.

Very best,

Nice shots! Everyday I get more and more tempted to pick a Sony mirrorless body up.

I haven't regretted my move yet. The image quality is great and the body is much smaller for day to day shooting. I also enjoy using old manual focus lenses with the focusing aids.

That's actually a brown pelican. We do have the white one's here as well. When I put the title on the photo I wasn't referring to the species. I can see how that would be misleading...

So not only has this forum convinced me to purchase tons of camera gear, now we're moving on to kayaks?

I was hoping to get out and paddle this weekend but everywhere around here is way above flood stage. They've even evacuated people. It would not be a sound decision to paddle in those conditions.
