After reviewing some of my pictures on my monitor, I've noticed that some of the pictures have many thin vertical lines in the entire sky portion of the pictures. Almost like streaks.
It's a bright overcast sky(if that makes sense) that these lines show up in.
The lines aren't so prominent that they are noticeable right away but, they are visible in the image.
A shutter speed slower than 1/200 is when they start to become noticeable.
They don't appear using 1/200 and faster.
I was using the Canon 28-135 lens on a Canon 40D.
I haven't noticed these lines under the same sky conditions with my other lenses on the same camera.
Not to say they aren't possibly there but, just haven't come across any yet.

Can anyone explain what might be causing this?
Might be hard to make out the lines in the attached picture but, they are more noticeable in the original size picture.

vertical lines or horizontal lines?
I see 3 or 4 horizontal lines at the top of the image, but I can't see any vertical lines. posting a 100% crop of the lines would be easier i think for everyone to see what you're talking about
after "zooming in", i see that it's not 3 or 4 lines, but rather 1 thick bar...and actually there's a vertical one as well crossing it on the left side.

Vertical zoom the browser you'll see it. I can on an 8-bit display at least.

They're there, but I had to copy the image to GIMP and push the curves to the extreme to see them.

The RGB values only seem to alter by a value of 1 (in each channel). That sort of change shouldn't be visible on your monitor without turning contrast up to the extreme, and IMO is nothing worth worrying about either.

I can see them easily simply by zooming the image he posted in firefox on an 8-bit LG W3000H

I guess the way to see if its the monitor or the camera is too print them out and see if they show up.

distant rain??

the banding doesn't look at all like 7D vertical banding and the 40D ws never known for that

hopefully rain, maybe something broke in the 40D though

it's there, not easy to see at first, but zoom in and then you see it easily and then when you go back to regular it stands out a lot more once you know what you are looking for, it's in the white part of the sky

I can see them without zooming in at all with my monitor on its normal settings, though I wouldn't have noticed them at that size without being told to look for them. I am sure I would see it if editing the image.

There is definitely something wrong, but I am not sure what is causing it.

Finally saw it by tilting the monitor so everything is extremely blown out. Maybe its a factor of being overexposed?

Rain would make sense (because of the shutter speed) but the streaks to me are just too uniform and long to be rain.

I don't think I can post the original at full size due to attachment size limitations.
This attached zoomed in picture shows the area with the lines.

The lines aren't as noticeable when I look at the picture using the Windows picture and fax viewer on my computer but, they do become more noticeable when using ZoomBrowser EX .
They aren't as noticeable in the original picture but they became more obvious after I did a little bit of processing to the highlight area. Can't remember exactly what I did but it would've been something very basic as I'm no expert in post processing.

Quite certain that the lines are not distant rain and I don't think my monitor is what's causing the lines.
Thought it might've been but then, I've looked at other pictures with blown out highlights and didn't notice any lines.

I'm thinking it might be the lens more than anything that is the issue.
I'll have to go through more pictures with blown out highlights to see if it's this particular lens or if it is the camera that is the problem.
Will also get this picture printed and see if the lines appear.
