Hi chaps, just got hold of a Hama circular polariser and took it for a drive this morning, need some help please ... using it on my Sigma 120-400 I couldn't use the hood with the little sticky out thing that helps with the rotation ... OK so I took off the sticky thing and attached the hood, then couldn't reach in to rotate the filter ... so removed the hood but then I really struggled to see whether the filter was achieving any effect. I wasn't really sure what to look for - I was at the beach and was trying to turn the lens whilst looking at the sun reflecting off the water but, as I say, struggled a bit ... anyone any tips please. Also is the position of rotation dependent on the angle of light to the 'scene' ? Best Roger

The best thing to do when using a polariser is to take of the hood. Besides protection it doesn't do that much because the polariser helps you get rid of flares and improves contrast.

The effect of a polariser is very clearly to see if you use it correctly. Maintain an angle of 35-45° towards the reflecting surface and turn it. You will see the effect change. For creating deep blue skies, try to get an angle of 90° towards the sun for the best effect. After a few times you'll get the hang of it and will know when to use a polariser.

You can always try the effect by looking at an LCD screen while turning it. At some point the screen should turn completely black.

Thanks Bert - I'll persevere - I think I got a bit stressed this morning ... hand holding my big Sigma whilst twisting the filter, trying to stand up in the wind and keep an eye on the dog all at the same time. I'll try a calmer approach in the garden - good of you - Roger

You're welcome. That's what PotN is for. :) If you have any questions, please ask!
