A plea for some advice :D

I may have a buyer for my MPE but I am not sure how best to go about arranging payment if he decides to buy - it came about via a friend who uses TP and told the guy about me so we have been corresponding.

He (the possible buyer) suggested using PayPal and I have an account but havent updated it for a couple of years, but am I right in thinking that if you use PayPal they make a charge for their services? Also I dont really know how to go about actually using it this way - only used it for sponsor stuff and once or twice on ebay some years ago lol.

Is bank transfer the safest option? My choice was he pays buy cheque, I wait for it to clear, he waits and trusts me. We want some way that offers both of us security.

What do you guys do these days then?

Thanks in advance.

Linda

Hi Linda

Just my 2p's worth :) You do not say but is the potential buyer local'ish if so then arrange a meet at say a coffee shop and go with friend as 'support', that way you can ask for cash and he can try the lens (assuming you are willing ~ but a little test driving a car make sure he leaves cash in your hand while he steps outside to take the test pictures).

If not local then personally I would prefer a bank transfer (note ~ there was a spate of forged bank cheques [Bank drafts] a few years back so even that once considered very secure method had a scare) but I hope others can chime with PayPal feedback???

All the best :D

That was a great meal ~ you must have a good set of pans :p

Hi - thanks for that. Unfortunately he is Devon/Cornwall area so not an option to come round the house lol.

Yes, the bank thing appealed but I know its not foolproof either. Sounds like it might have to be PayPal, but I am not paying for using it lol.

Thanks for your input, it was helpful.

Im not desperate to sell it really, I just dont get the time to spend on it as its not a lense you can just pop into the garden with and grab a shot in a couple of minutes when you see something so if someone wanted it then I would sell it, this is how this came about.

I'd use paypal.
You need to tell him to pay you as a gift, then you do not pay commision.
this can be accessed by going to the send money tab on the summary page, then
in the window there is a tab for purchase (default) or personal, click the personal tab and click the gift radio button. The its the same.

If you have not used your ebay account for a while, might be worth going into it and making suse its OK.

Ooh thanks for that - so just to clarify, I use my ebay account for the PayPal purchase and then follow the instructions above ie payment of gift? If thats the case, that sounds perfect.

Many thanks for that.

No, just give him your email address, that has the paypal account.
The info I gave was so you could see what I was talking about, you don't need to do that. The person buying the lens does that.
Just check to see that the payment has come through before shipping. You go straight to your paypal account.
The other option is to put it on ebay and then do it that way.

I know that Victor has purchased from them a few times. They do have a brick & mortar store as well i believe.

I bought my 7D and my 24 - 105 there. No probs with either and I went there in person because it's about 20 mins from me. Grey import thing doesn't worry me either tbh.

Either of those is good but I would go to Dungeness toward the end of the day as the light will be better.

I met Clare and Lee today at the BWC - thanks guys for showing me around - can't believe I've never been there and I live so close  and thanks Lee for the loan of the lens, nice stuff. Will be saving up for a longer lens in the next few months for sure.

So here's a few from today. They're a wee bit gloomy but it was quite gloomy today.

Be careful paying as a gift. You dont get any assistance if the deal turns sour. Ask me how i know.
