...trying really hard to improve my panning shots. The boat was moving fairly quickly, so I just randomly focused on the officer towards the back. where do you guys place the focus point when panning?

Sorry cannot answer your question. Your shot is a lot better than I could have done.

http://www.lightstalking.com/ (external link) has a great section on panning for both new panners tips and advanced. personally i would of focused probably pretty much where you did. though as i understand it in panning alot of people set the distence + focus to an area before hand and then tuck there elbows into there body ''locking'' them in place and the releasing multiple exposures as it is coming into and out of focus to get the best possible shot/angle and youll be able to choose from a few while most will be rubbish..

again dont know how you took it i.e. tripod, elbows, normally....so im just repeating some things ive read elsewhere!

i love the shot though.

thanks for the link, I'll get to it later this afternoon. I watched a video on youtube about panning. I shot this on a tripod, tv, continuous(i took 7 shots), and ai servo with the focus on a person's head(a lot easier said than done). I would've waited a couple more seconds to have the boat directly in front of me but as you can see the railing was starting to come in and there was a buoy directly to the right of it!

I like everything except the railing (or whatever it is) in the lower right.
