I noticed that my photos seem "degraded" when I upload them to flickr. So is it something I am doing wrong or is that just a nature of the beast (flickr)?
My simple process (CS4) is as follows:

  • Open RAW file in ACR
    • Adjust (as needed) WB, exposure, recovery, fill, blacks, clarity, vibrance and saturation
    • Adjust contrast in Curves
  • Transfer to PS
    • Resize for web (1025 on long side, 72 or 75ppi)
    • Sharpen using Unsharp Mask (75 or 100, 1, 1)
    • Fade Luminosity
    • Save as JPEG
  • Upload to FlickR

Looking at these couple of shots and EXIF do you see something I am doing wrong?
It could be that the image quality is bad and I cant help it with my PP but it seems like the images look a lot better right before I upload them to Flickr.

Its also very possible that I am paranoid and making stuff up and my images are superb but I dont realize it. LOL

Is a colour thing or a general IQ concern?

Colour - is a matching issue?

Are you shooting in sRGB or aRGB? If aRGB are you using Save For Web Devices? In Save For Web Devices there is a Convert to sRGB checkbox. Also check Embed Colour Profile and in the preview select use document profile. You can also go - Edit - Convert To Profile and pick sRGB to permanently convert you file.

Sharpening

Personally I'm seeing a lot of artifacts - possibly from resizing, sharpening or both. I think a Radius of 1 is too much for the web. 0.3 should be plenty. I never touch the Threshhold.

As for PPI you can leave it at anything. PPI is for print only and will not effect web viewing.

Have a look at these videos. In the resizing one the presenter states a threshold of 3 for print but 0.3 is adequate for web. You gotta get past the upsizing part.

http://www.youtube.com …4mV3NsLmXw&feature=relmfu (external link)

In the sharpening video the presenter deletes the Smart Sharpen filter at about minute 5:30 . I don't know why but I leave it for masking purposes.

After you are done try this amazing process. If you need help just let us know.

absolutely. how do I get it to you?

I have a feeling it is something I am doing wrong or not doing at all. its mostly artifacts that bother me so it could be I am oversharpening or something.

I just checked EXIF and it is sRGB.

You can make a Raw (or any) file available using YouSendIt.com.

With the free use, you enter your email address as the "recipient", then upload. You will receive a notification right away that will contain a link to your file. Copy that link and paste it here so that people can download the file.

I'd suggest that you do this with the jpeg file you uploaded to Flickr, not just the Raw file. You will have to go through two separate uploads, but it would be useful for us to see if the breakdown was in your resizing/sharpening or in the processing Flickr did to it.

What browser are you using to view them on Flickr? Chrome isn't color-managed, so even if you use sRGB, they may look bad in Chrome. Try viewing them in Firefox or Safari (if Mac) and see if they still look bad on your Flickr account.

I changed from Chrome back to Firefox for exactly this reason. I like the features and speed of Chrome, but no color management was a deal-breaker.

Mike, let me get this straight -- are you just talkingg about the "oversharp" look you see on your first set of photos, or to problems you are having with the colors?
