First off wasn't sure if this might needed to be in the Accessories & Storage section ...

Anyway I'm in the process of ordering a Tamron 17-35mm f/2.8-4 lens. So would I be better off getting a thin CP even though the x1.6 crop factor = 27.2mm @ 17mm? I have a regular 62mm CP for my Sigma 18-125mm and notice slight vignetting using it @ 18mm but clears up around 21mm.

Thanks as always ... ;)

Unless you're dealing with a "normal" to telephoto range lens, it's always possible you'll run into vignetting from a single polarizer. I haven't used the Tamron 17-35, so can't say if it would cause problems, but I would hope not. However, as it's usable on FF bodies as well, I'd be inclined to get the thin, Just In Case you succumb to the urge for a larger format body.

I got a thin mount CPL for my 17mm on a 10D (now 20D) and have never come close to vignetting even when stacking an ND filter under the CPL. The pain of the thin mount is that it has no threads and I can't put a lens cap on it. I think the Hoya Pro series does have threads - I wish I had gotten that one. But I wouldn't buy a thin-mount unless I had plans on going to a full-frame sensor - and even then I wouldn't buy the thin mount until I got the FF.

You can take my 100-400 L away when you pry it from my cold, dead fingers.

Thanks for the move ... yea the added expense of the Hoya Pro series is a little stiff and I don't plan on the FF switch in the immediate future, would be nice. I was considering the Tiffen for around $79.00. Most of my CP usage in the past has been where I used the lens hood for protection so the no filter ring might not be such an issue. I'd always adjust the CP with the hood off and then reattach it while moving around.

My gripe with no filter ring is that you can't use the clip-on lens cap. Most of the time when I use a polarizer I have it on most of the day, and there are times when I want to put the cap on. Some manufacturers provide a slip-on cap, but they are easily lost and not easily replaced.

Have Fun,

Rick

This is the regular Hoya 77mm CP filter on my new 17-40 f/4L @ 17mm ... I don't see any vignetting in this image:
