I dont think we have a thread dedicated to panning shots. I love the look of them but it's something I'm still trying to perfect. Thought it might be good to see a collection altogether so post away!

Wow Sally, you've got much better results than I could ever get from my 400D. I especially love the first one.

I love them too but I don't think they are panning are they? they are of course great shots of fast moving dogs - but yours Whippeticious are very good examples of panning - the background has a true zoomy effect to it with the subject sharp.

thanks Gundogs. I love the zoomy effect, it gives a real feeling of speed, but I think the others might still be classed as panning because I think the term panning just means you follow the subject as it moves. The look just varies depending on the shutter speed. Of course, I might be wrong. ;)

thats what i assumed panning meant, all mine were shot with very high shutter speeds as at racing i take them as the dog(s) approach me and follow them past me (which is panning?) so i need the high shutter to get the other shots too.

Hi Sally,
here's an article about panning.
http://www.digital-photography-school.com …hotograph-moving-subjects (external link)
hope that clarifies things a little. It's a very definite technique, which is very different to freezing action shots like you've done with your whippets racing. Both are great techniques and looks - just different that's all.
