I just heard they are purchasing Nikon as well.

Nicon, Cankon, Canik, Nikcan are some of the new possible corporate names. Rumour is the new name will be a world vote.

heard they will be known as Niknon

I hope they are announcing that they are going to finally drop the "D" from all their model names. It's 2011 - we know it's digital.

Funnily enough we see lots of Canon advertisements in Brisbane, yet no Nikon at all. It seems Canon are pushing while the dark side is content to sit back.

We get the opposite feeling here in the US sometimes. So maybe these companies can only focus on a few markets at a time effectively.

You really only have to advertise where you need to make a bigger impact.

According to a friend who has been a commercial shooter for nearly 50 years (and who is also Japanese), Canon leads in the West while Nikon is much stronger in the East.

Therefore, they get Canon ads and we get Nikon ads (in the USofA)

Hollywood ... so, EF-mount camcorder?

That's my bet--if nothing else, probably something super-high-end camcorder related. Kinda goes hand in hand with "red carpet event" marketing campaign.

It will be a cell phone... an L-Phone... with a red ring, and a direct print button.

It's about time for the pendulum to swing the other way. My prediction: next generation of sensor technology. Lots of gear heads have been bemoaning Canon's "old" technology ever since Nikon finally caught up with their own CMOS sensors. I've been hearing chatter on Canon's continuing sensor R&D. I'd like to see something with a killer dynamic range that does not continue the senseless megapixel wars and will put the final nail in the coffin of all the film-lovers' criticisms. It will be fun to go on the Nikon forums and read all the Nikonite gear heads moaning about how Nikon has dropped the ball, even though their cameras, as well as Canon's, remain excellent.

Cor, well the 1Ds4 is obviously long overdue, and where can you get more glamourous than Hollywood to announce a revamped flagship!

But who knows...

You have never been to Hollywood I take it. Nothing glamorous about it  It is pretty dirty

Some other bloggers are speculating a FF video camera with high res video. Kinda like Sony's PMW-F3.

That seams plausible

Don't try to confuse me with the facts, my mind is already made up.

Sure you will, you just don't know it yet. ;)

When the marketing wizards at Canon get done with us, we'll all need one of whatever this is.

Best prediction I've seen on what they're doing came from a friend who works in the movie industry (lives in NM, but works in Hollywood).

It could be the "4k camera" that was shown in concept at the Canon Expo last year in New York.

The 4k camera includes the capability to shoot at 4096x2160 resolution at 60 frames per second, compared to the 1280x1080 resolution of full HD.

Announcement.

So we can remain filthy rich Canon is spearheading mirror-less technology. Once the last batch of mirror cameras have been released all further cameras will be mirror-less. Service to mirror cameras will cease 3 years after release date. Also all current lenses will become obsolete. An entire line of new lenses will be released that can only work with mirror-less cameras. Lens service will also cease 3 years after release date. Canon will except trades through the loyalty program.

We promise unsurpassed image quality. The new sensors will be extreme high ISO capable followed by unchallenged dynamic range. Also we will change the direct print button to mirror lock up. That should gain a few points.

Are you as excited as we are?
