I wonder what the terminal velocity of a 24-105 is. Any physics majors around?

Not sure, but judging by some guesstimates I threw in here (external link) (calc for Terminal Velo) it isn't really that fast...maybe 50 MPH

ok, it was me, should be obvious by how often I trash the lens on forums

i was hoping a good knock might shift the elements into alignment better and make it perform like a $1000 lens

I'm guessing it back focuses some...

As in, "Back in the plane, it was focusing but not so much anymore..."

They're quoted saying 'it was a foot from her son's pillow' as if he almost died or something.... just because it went through a layer of roofing and one board doesn't mean it would have traveled through the roof and two floors of the house

But how can a thing like this happen? :) Was the lens sitting on a camera mounted on the outside of the helicopter / plane? That is probably the only reason I can think of..

Quite possibly it was during either an aerial photo shoot or an air to air shoot and someone thought it was a good idea to try and change lenses in flight without being safely inside the aircraft.

I've gone skydiving with "toys" (weighted shuttlecocks) that were about the same weight as the 24-105. The lens hood would probably act like a very LOW drag tail on a shuttlecock. The stuff I jumped with had a HIGH drag tail and would still easily fall at 120+ mph.

If you look at the photos in this LINK (external link), you'll see the lens hood isn't all that damaged. I'll bet that lens was doing well over 120 mph when it hit, lens mount first, into that roof.
