That is probably the only reason I can think of..Quite possibly it was during either an aerial photo shoot or an air to air shoot and someone thought it was a good idea to try and change lenses in flight without being safely inside the aircraft. The lens hood would probably act like a very LOW drag tail on a shuttlecock. The stuff I jumped with had a HIGH drag tail and would still easily fall at 120+ mph.
