I suppose it's something to look forward to with aging. At some point we just won't care. I think you have to be about 70ish.

It was icy, and she skidded out of her lane into ours. The car wasn't totaled, but was seriously banged up. We turned the thing over to our lawyer, only because his partner happened to drive by, saw the carnage, and told him about it. He called the next day, and wondered why we hadn't contacted him already. Anyway, I really only wanted the car fixed, and he made that happen, no problem. Then, several months after we'd completely forgotten the incident, he sent us another check for $3,500.00. To this day, I have no idea what that was for, but it became part of the down payment for our first house. Wow! That's a pretty big sum for no explanation. I wonder what it was for, too. My name is Lonnie, but I answer to Thomas too.

The main reason the insurance company declared my car totaled in 2004 was because both airbags deployed. The car was old, had a ton of miles on it, and it would have cost them more to replace the airbags than Kelly Blue Book said the car was worth. And, that's before they even looked at the actual damage to the car, which was pretty severe. But, what that woman did to cause the accident was incredibly stupid and dangerous, and that's the main reason I (with my friend's help) went after her insurance company. The accident I was in last July had the potential to be a whole heckuva lot worse. If that car had hit me square on instead of at a slight angle, there's no question I would have been severely injured. Possibly even killed. But, I was lucky this time. As bad as the accident was, I came out of it with only a bruise on my arm and a broken fingernail. When I asked my attorney friend for some advice on how to handle things, he told me to make sure I tell the insurance company about the bruise. "They'll probably give you about $500 just to shut you up." The next day when I was talking to the claims adjuster, I'd barely gotten the word "bruise" out of my mouth before she interrupted and said she'd send me a check for $500. ![]()

One side wants to pay nothing, and the other frequently wants the moon. 'Victims' are frequently trying to ripoff the system, and those that do are no better than the scumbag insurance companies IMHO. By the way, Lonnie, I'm not suggesting that you were doing anything like that. I'm just ranting in general. I'm not short. I'm concentrated awesome!

This was another outcome: We decided after the insurance company settled we weren't going to buy another car right away so we used the money to get me a 40d and pay off some bills. John

Belmondo wrote in post #13842322 I have been extremely lucky (knock wood). If either of my vehicles were to be totaled right now, I'd get far less than their true value (to me) because of the high mileage. The Lexus has over 140K miles, and the truck is approaching 130K. Both are in relatively perfect condition, and I expect them to last many more years. Ellen had 216K on the odometer last July when we got clobbered. I fully expected the insurance companies to declare her a total loss because of the mileage alone. They never even mentioned the word "total". Allstate spent almost $4,000 putting her back into shape (plus the $500 for my bruise and whatever they paid Enterprise for a couple weeks for a rental car). Today, Ellen has about 228K on the odometer. My name is Lonnie, but I answer to Thomas too.

I got rear ended by a Honda. It was a chain accident. She hit me but was hit from behind by someone else who didn't see we had stopped and ran into the line of us at 50+. I too got lucky and had no visible damage. Her car sort of went under mine tossing me into the air. My tow hooks did a number on her though. I never filed a claim and the car was eventually sold at about 150k. Her Honda was totaled though it didn't look that bad. Lots of crinkled sheet medal but looked otherwise ok. Not sure why, but call me JJ.
