Last weekend marked the end of the major fun fly events held in our region and as luck would have it the weather was near perfect. Nice skies, comfortable temps & light breezes. I had decided to once & for all take a risk & shoot a lot of the flying with my 7D and of all things a consumer level superzoom, the Tamron 18-270 VC, plus I also decided to try alternating my 35-350 L & 100-400 L between the 7D & my workhorse 1Ds2. The Tamron did very well, but as expected the AF was slow but once it started tracking a plane it stayed locked on. The 100-400 has always performed well on the 7D but I can't say the same for the old 35-350. It was almost as slow as the Tamron, & sometimes wouldn't find the plane at all until zoomed way back. Both L's snap into focus on the 1Ds2. I shot the Tamron in the morning, then retired it to do the other comparison.

I still don't like the distraction of looking through the AF points in the viewfinder, PLUS from observation the AF point being displayed is not accurate when shooting these. I often see the AF point displayed as being the one used and it's on empty sky but in actual fact the plane is in perfect focus.

Thanks Frank. No, they have ribbons attached to make them easier to see once dropped. Just before take off on his first (of 2) bomb runs several people were yelling at him to hold on because they thought he was tangled up in something.

Thanks for sharing these pictures. I'm looking to get into the R/C flying hobby myself.

These look like fun. Someday.. if I ever get money to blow... I might look into picking up this hobby. :D
