1) I used 'desaturate' in PS (I am a Philistine - apologies to the PS B&W gurus) :D Try the PP Stickies for several better conversion methods.
I'm wondering if you've tried printing the portion of a known standard print that has a true grayscale? If not, you can get one here.

Hey Gavin, firts very cool concept and shots. Please take this for what it is worth since it is coming from an amature... but the ball looks overly luminous particularly in shot 3. While the ball is important, in this particular shot it seems to be really glowing with light, kinda sucking the attention away from the player. Most likely it is just me or my monitor... so please take this with a grain of salt. Many moons ago when I did this for college, we had a simular problem and we would produce our BW using a color head, using primarily a singal color channel.

Anyway... cool stuff....

Ahhh... my huge glowing balls

The ball certainly provided a far more reflective target for the flash than anything else - so that probably explains its prominence. When I finally get round to putting the finished product together, I might indulge in some 'ball burning in' ;)

ah crude... it was the 4th one I was talking about... and I can't type before 8 am and I've had my first cup.... I should refrain from making myself look little an even bigger idiot that early in the morning - there is still plenty of time to do that. Plus, I should be the last person to tell you what to do with your...... ah never mind.

I should go back and try this on some of my earlier shots... who knows.... some might look okay with Color Balance not being an issue....

Yep, I think #4 is the inverse square law in action...

...and B&W certainly removes any concerns about those nasty vapour lamps;)

The bracket is over £100 in the UK and not really worth the money to be honest (but the price does include the off-camera cord).

I've got this one on longterm loan and I can't see myself using it for anything other than hoops really. Although I do like the fact that it is compact and very robust (designed for paparazzi type shooting rather than wedding photographers), so I'm prepared to experiment a bit to get the most out of it.

 Tried that... but ended up pointing the flash towards my ear rather than the players ;) I need more ghetto PJ practice!
