Please take this for what it is worth since it is coming from an amature... but the ball looks overly luminous particularly in shot 3. While the ball is important, in this particular shot it seems to be really glowing with light, kinda sucking the attention away from the player. Most likely it is just me or my monitor... so please take this with a grain of salt. Many moons ago when I did this for college, we had a simular problem and we would produce our BW using a color head, using primarily a singal color channel.

I should go back and try this on some of my earlier shots... who knows.... some might look okay with Color Balance not being an issue.... Yep, I think #4 is the inverse square law in action...
