Hi chaps, I want to start taking more video with my 550d, I've poked around the internet and on this forum but does anyone have any recommendations for, maybe, a good book please ? I've also come across a lot of comments about 'Magic Lantern' - is it 'totally' safe ... I don't really want to risk the warranty on my new camera ?

Thanks for your help

Roger

The interenet has GOBS of resources for learning video on your DSLR so I'm not sure where you've been poking... LOL ;)
DSLR video shooter, DSLR film noob, learning DSLR video, Philip Bloom (although he can be a bit technical and deal with with very expensive gear), Vimeo video school, Youtube of course... just to name a few places that can give you literally weeks of information to watch. Dave (learning DSLR video) is really good because he started from scratch and recorded his progress. You will probably be surprised at the amount of info and video on those sites if you dig (I've actually started from the first post on many of those sites and worked my way through). Lots on Magic Lantern info/tips as well :)

We have been using Magic Lantern on all our 550 and 5d's and it works great.

Nothing is "totally" safe (obviously) , but there are hundreds of thousands of users of ML.

When I say that nothing is safe, I mean that even Canon's own firmware could corrupt your camera if the power somehow failed while updating or some glitch in the checksum allowed a corrupted bios to be loaded.

You read about many people who update their motherboard's bios with the manufacture's firmware and hose their system - so nothing is totally safe.

Thanks Brick - I'm convinced I replied to your reply a couple of days ago but obviously didn't hit the 'post' button, anyway, thanks for your reply and it's good of you to help, it's just what I needed, you've obviously done the leg-work, I have come across tons of stuff but so much of it was repetitive and I was after someone with experience who could save me wasting as much time as I seemed to be doing ... thank you ... and vid1900 - thanks again - I'll check out ML a little more thoroughly ... I installed ML on my T2i last month and couldn't be happier! I was planning to sell it once I got my 7d, but instantly changed my mind when I saw how much capability ML adds to the camera. It really does convert a $700 camera into a $2000-$3000 beast! So now I have the T2i set up permanently for video and use the 7d for stills.

Also, remember that the camera itself is not altered. All you have to do to return it to factory spec is reformat the SD Card
