ben, I have thought about the RRS MH-01, it looks gorgeous but it's just so BIG.

Mike, I've kind of thought about that, especially as my Timbuk2 bags have all sorts of places to clip things on. But then I'd have the monopod swinging about, or poking me in the back or the leg, and exposed to the winter rain unless I found a cover which may or may not block the wrist strap. Overall, my wish is to just fit the thing inside my bag, but I just don't think that will happen for now. :(

Well, Amazon dropped the price of the Gitzo GM2561T to match B&H's after-rebate price, so I went ahead and snagged one.

After using my current monopod around the city a bit last weekend, I definitely want something with tilt functions on top of it, so I guess I'll be searching for a ballhead/monopod head this weekend.

So how much did you end up getting it for from Amazon?

It's currently $188 (plus tax :( ) at Amazon. B&H and Adorama have it for $228 with a $40 mail-in rebate that ends today.

Amazon has sold quite a few since dropping the price, when I ordered it said "only 15 left in stock" and last time I checked they were down to 9.

Well yea, $188 and then WITH a $40 MIR makes it $148! Heck, I may pick one up for myself!

Wow, I really have worked too many hours. Thanks for the reminder that the rebate still applies to my Amazon purchase, off to print one out.

I was just happy that I could get the $188 (reasonable price, anyway) without having to deal with forms. For $148 I'll go find a stamp!

lol Yea, thats a heck of a deal! But after looking at it again I remember why I didnt go with the traveler in the first place. It only holds a max or 9.9lbs and quite a few people mention it flexes too much. Since I dont need the most compact setup I would rather get something more stable IF im going to get a monopod. But still, $148 is a heck of a deal!

The GM5561T IMO would be the way to go for a compact monopod setup that still had lots of strength, but it is two inches longer and an twice the price! LINK (external link)

Success!!!

My Gitzo 2561T (external link) arrived today, along with the Joby Ballhead X (external link) I decided to try (yay Amazon Prime.)

It's probably not the first combo that would come to mind, but I like it. The Gitzo isn't quite as big as I'd feared (although also not as small as I'd hoped) and the Joby ballhead is nice and light (9.6oz) and handles my existing Arca Swiss compatible plates. When put together, the combo is actually very nicely balanced, and easy to use.

Since I'm short, I don't have to extend the lowest, skinniest section of the Gitzo, making it stable enough even under my 100-400L lens.

Now I just have to figure out the best/least annoying way to attach it to my bags. Fortunately, I'm visiting my parents next weekend and I'm sure my mom can rig something up with her sewing machine. :)

Awesome! Glad you like it! And yes, Amazon Prime is the BEST THING EVER!

That is also very nice that you dont have to extend the last leg. That does help with stability.
