I don't know anything but I think a 24-70L update is coming...

Amazon.com: Only 1 left in stock. (external link)
(Very few options left under "More Buying Options." This list is normally full.)

BHphoto: No stock. (external link)
(This has been the case for at least a week.)

JR.com: No stock/on order. (external link)

Exceptions:
Adorama and Newegg have it in stock.

Has supply simply dwindled to zero, post-earthquake? (If so, I am not seeing the same pattern with other lenses like the 35 1.4L.)

OR has production of this 24-70L simply ceased, clearing the assembly lines for an update?

I guess we'll find out between now and early November.

A 24-105/2.8L IS could be as big as a 70-200/2.8L IS. If true, that would be great; the two lens can balance each other out on belt mounted lens pouches, one per hip. :p

Seeing how good hybrid IS is on the 100L macro and the awesome lens coatings on the 70-200/2.8L IS mk II, I would love to see the latest technologies applied to the 24-70 and 100-400.

The mere thought that the 24-70 might be upgraded has kept me from buying a 24-70 already, I should be thankful to Canon for saving me the money as I buy other glass first.

When the 70-200 2.8L IS II came out BH and amazon and everyone still had stock of the MKI's. It's not indication.

just a high demand lens. nothing suspicious. the stock would never go empty before a new lens comes out. its not smart to discontinue something when an update isnt even out yet. and if there is a mkII or IS version coming out the old version would still be in production most likely as a cheaper alternative to the new and improved.

In Australia, the 35mm F1.4 is out of stock...been told by sales person, it's because of the Earth quake and tsunami.

Then it would be the ultimate walk around lens :D.
And I don't need to go to the gym to train my biceps! :D

So everyone is selling out of 24-70's in the expectation that a new lens will be released knowing full well that it will be a month or maybe two before they have them for sale to the public.... I don't think so. Most likely the first round of recovery of the lack of supply after the earthquakes.

I don't care about IS, but if it has similar optics to the 70-200 mk II, I'll definitely buy one.

Nothing worse than listening to that damn focus motor grinding away!
