Picture style problem

Having shot a series of jpg test pix using 6 different Canon Picture Styles on my 30D, I find that, apart from monochrome, although they look different on the camera LCD display they all look the same when viewed on the pc. I have tried viewing with DPP, Lightroom, Windows Live Gallery and I can see no difference.

One other problem is that I the metadata will not show which picture style was used on each shot.

Can anyone help please ?

I was trying to do a side by side comparison of different styles on different subjects in order to cut down on post processing of "snapshot" as opposed to "work" files. As these are jpeg shots with the style embedded shouldn't they show the style that they were shot with regardless of the viewing platform?

The different styles do indeed look different to me, but I've come at it a different way, namely, shooting in raw and ignoring style (set it to neutral in the camera). Picture styles are then applied in DPP and the results examined on the computer monitor. I can't see a difference between Standard, Neutral and faithful; however, I see a distinct difference between tose three styles and landscape or portrait (neither of which I like).

I have a reisistance to messing about with styles, white balance and sharpness in the camera, on the fly while actively engaged in trying to take pctures. Much better to shoot in raw, in my view, and apply tuning and improvements later at liesure in PP.

Its refreshing to see another photographers modus operandi and whilst I can appreciate your preference for the workflow described I regret that I have neither the time nor inclination to enter into the merits or otherwise of such a system and fail to understand the relevance to my problem. Although your reply is of no practical use to me you may draw some consoation that your reply has aat least gained you another point on the ladder to "Expert Member "

I wouldn't even use the styles although I disagree with relying on white balance in post. I still worry about white balance and build the best shot so that there is LESS post production to do.

Are all the picture styles at their default settings? There should certainly be some discernible difference between the various styles. I assume when you say "no difference" you mean that literally.

Having now updated Zoombrowser and viwed on there, I saw a neglible difference between Landscape and the other styles. After 40 years of colour matching experience the difference is so slight that I would have left it uncorrected if I had been printing it.
The styles were set at default. It was nice to see that ZB DOES show the Style metadata, at least it confirms that the style was selected in camera.
After reading other reviews and trying itI think that Autmn Hues with +Sat and +Sharpening may be what I am looking for but it would be nice to think I had other choices of style that I could use for snapshots and save time tweaking with LR

The best I can suggest is try tweaking various styles until you get the look you want.

That sounds like a brilliant idea and one which you could have patented except for one thing - you obviously lifted the idea from my own posting.

 Yes I did. I think you've hit your sarcasm quota today. Perhaps you'd feel more comfortable somewhere people will jump to find original and creative solutions for all your problems. There - I've hit my quota also.

You can download more picture styles - Can't remember the web site but I downloaded about 60+ picture styles someone had create with Picture Style editor. I ended up not using them but I'll see if I can find that site again if thats what you're looking for.

For someone that is asking for help, on an internet forum, you sure seem to be an ungrateful person.

I hope you find what you're looking for. Karma is a ****.

Walt, I would appreciate that link to see if there was somethong more suited to my needs.

Sean, your shots definitely show a difference, partic the landscape, unfortunately with the air pollution in my part of the world we rarely see blue sky like that so 50% of the landscape style is wasted. Are your settings straight from the box or have they been twaeked ?

Strontium, I am extremely grateful for help, BUT I do not appreciate replies from those who do not study or address the problem, or use any old reply just to gain posting points. Now, which camp do you belong to ?
